Stackpole is planning to publish Viking Panzers by Ewald Klapdor in May 2011. You can find it on Amazon...

And a very good book it is too (as is everything by Klapdor...). I paid an absolute fortune for the German original.

It is a first-class unit history mixed with Klapdor's memoirs - and Klapdor is a very good eyewitness.

Has anyone had any luck reading this? The grammar is putting me to sleep. And the, excessive, German-esque, use of, commas. Is it me? Is there hope?

I guess I don't really understand your query. I'm reading and enjoying it with no difficulty. It seems like many other unit histories, and not different or unique in its writing. Klapdor's voice and observations remind me a bit Georg Maier's style in Drama Between Budapest and Vienna, even if the one book is a unit history, and the other a campaign history.

I've got a copy given me by a Wiking vetean and it's an excellent reference source. Klapdor was well positioned to observe and record the regiment's history from its inception as the first tank battalion of the Waffen-SS until the bitter end. He was amply assisted by other veterans of the regiment, who loaned him a great deal of personal archival material. In the German edition, he included dozens of pages reproduced from the Bundesarchiv that illustrates tank & personnel strenghts, reports from higher headquarters, correspondence from commanders, etc. Hope the English version reproduces those as well, including the full-color maps from the BA-MA. It will be worth every penny you pay, believe me!
Abbott: This sure is a beautiful forest.
Costello: Too bad you can't see it for all those trees!

I keep picking up this book & the writing keeps getting to me. There are so many English majors out there...it would be a good idea to employ one to rewrite books like these.

The translator's duty is to maintain the style of the original, not to rewrite the text.

I think it's a great book to read in english. I received the original German publication back in 1984 and I'm just as much enjoying re-reading it in english after all those years. It's a highly recommended book to purchase = you won't be disappointed.

Very true. That should be an editorial decision.

A classic case in poor translation:
http://www.amazon.com/Second-Sex-Simone ... =1-2-fkmr0

"The Second Sex" by Simone de Beauvoir. For decades, the ladies have been stamping their feet charging that the original translator was a misogynist, an angry man, "Simone would NEVER have said that about a woman", etc. The publisher finally relented a few years ago & had it retranslated. It turns out that the book now has much more ink, and is a h e a v y read. h e a v y.

And guess what? Well, the meaning is the same...Simone did say all those (in some eyes) negative things about women & the passages were translated correctly...albeit smoothed out the first time. That made it a classic for decades. Now the new translation will languish on a few academic book cabinets.

Very easy to see. Go take a look at both books & compare sentence structure & see which you would rather read.

Funny you should say that. Nearly the whole book is devoted to frigid women. :D De Beauvoir is the like the female Sigmund Freud.
