I definitely agree, though, that a cursory "understanding" of German is extremely helpful. Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/, which is free), as well as some of the other translation tools and services are okay (sometimes) to get the general concept of what you are reading, but they all have problems with verbs and verb cases and tenses. Most of them absolutely MASSACRE anything but the most basic German grammar...
