Ranks of the Luftwaffe.

Post by Torben »

Can anyone please help me compare Luftwaffe ranks of the 30ies and 40ies with today´s ranks in say NATO?

Words like STAFFELKAPITAN - GRUPPENKOMMANDOR - GESCHWADERKOMMODORE JAGERGRUPPE ETC.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi,
Please see here
German Luftwaffe Ranks

The designations (STAFFELKAPITAN - GRUPPENKOMMANDOR - GESCHWADERKOMMODORE JAGERGRUPPE) you ask about are not ranks, they are titles, describing the positions (= billets), or in modern terminology, job descriptions. These positions did not necessarily indicate ranks. That is, contrary to some countries where position = rank (even if only a brevet rank), the German Luftwaffe (and the other branches) placed men into positions who were quailified, ranks being of secondary importance. In any event, most officers had to serve the required standard time in rank before being promoted, although exceptions existed.

Cheers
Leo
