Englich to Englich or Russian

Post by Rostislav »

I can not understand this phrase:"Stretcher-bearers came under fire, but a miracle, managed to get back in one piece".

What means " in one piece "? All stretcher-bearers are alive or one of them was lost? Or both of them were lost?

It means they both survived - "in one piece" i.e. not having had anything blown off!
