German uniform regiment question

I'm researching my German uncle Simon Pröll who served in the German army during WW2. I met him in 1986 when my mom took me to see my German relatives. He told me during my visit with him that he had served in the 88th Infantry Division, 246th Regiment. But on this picture his shoulder strap has a 10 on it. So I'm confused now. Can anybody help me clarify his regiment???

The picture shows a well decorated veteran Unteroffizier , EKII, Ost front, Infantry assault, black wound badge. He appears to be wearing his walking out uniform ( silver buttons ) . The slip on 10 on his shoulder boards is rather old fashioned and would not have been worn on,or close to the front line.
88th Div. 246th regiment fits this profile, as it spent most of its time on the Eastern Front; it could be that this gentleman was transferred, for a period of time , to a different unit , for any number of reasons. Sorry I can't pin down the number 10 more specifically.

from what I have read about his division is that his regiment was so depleted by late 1943 that it was absorbed by the 248th Regiment. I'm wondering if maybe he was transferred out to the 10th Regiment at that time.

I wrote to Berlin for a different uncle's service records....I may have to add him also.
