My father survived the breakout of the Chekassy pocket and made it to LissJanka on 17-02-44 having granatsplitter im gesicht und brustdurchschuss. (As a boy I remember feeling dads left cheek that still had a piece of shrapnel in it and seeing the bullet wound marks front and back of his chest). At the time he was an SS-Unterscharfuhrer attached to Stabskompanie 1 SS-Panzer Regiment 5 Unterstellung SS-Division Wiking. I have gotten this information and more officially from Deusche Dienstelle. I have several photos of him including 2 that have other comrades with him. Unfortunately my father died in 1988 before the wonderful internet etc.
I am wondering if there might be a Wiking Veterans Association and a remote possibilty that there may still be someone who genuinely knew my father and was with him during the breakout.
