meaning of upsidedown german wwii shoulder boards

Post by mightythor99 »

might seem like a dumb question,... but what does that actually mean? is that soldier an acting sgt or something? i've seen it several times, once was on a parade tunic dressed portfolio style photo,........ just saw it in a mountain troop pic. the boards are put on, upside down, so that the unit numbers, and tress would not show, only the colored soutash.
thanks!
I am interested in buying / trading for photo albums, photo groupings, diaries, feldpost groupings, etc, from any country in the world, any army/navy, etc, mostly 20th century!!

That's more of a security measure, especially for those units that carried numerical or other identification marks on their shoulder boards. Observers couldn't tell who was doing what if they saw them.

Not entirely sure how effective it was in reality, though.
