info about my grand father

Hi, I m trying to find info about my grand father, his name is Elfried Hartmann, He met my grand mother in antillas after the first war, and when Hitler call all the officers for the war 2, he came back in germany and my grand mother lost him. I will get a pic of him in a couple of wheeks My question: Do exist a register name for all officers? Mabe there his no many officers with the same name with him. Sorry for my bad english.... and thanks for any answers...
