Excellent post, thanks for sharing that. I have been interested in an English translation of "Soldaten Kampfer Kameraden" for quite some time, do you know the status of that project?

Thanks, but I have not heard of any further effort to translate those books into English. Has anyone else heard anything?

Here are a couple more photos of Paul Steinecke taken in 1943.

Hi John,

Boy-o-boy..... Paul Steinecke sure reminds me of Harry Carey, Jr.

Maybe Steinecke looks more like Harry Carey in this photo from July 1941 when he was a Speiß or 1st Sergeant and packing iron. The officer on the right is Erwin Schumacher, the Totenkopf Signal Battalion commander.

Hi John,

That's a great picture of der Spieß -- "Die Mutti der Kompanie" (sorry if my grammar is wrong .... that's what Herr Schultz at Sembach AB used to tell us back in 1976).

Here's a photo of Steinecke on the left next to his division commander, Helmut Becker, and corps commander, Herbert Gille, outside the "Totenkopf" Division command post in October 1944.

Steinecke, second from the right, with General v.Lüdwitz at the command post of III./Rgt. "Eicke" on October 10, 1944. The battalion commander, Heinz Müller, who later received the Ritterkreuz, is to the left of Steinecke in the photo.
