Finding German Vets

Post by John W. Howard »

Hello Gents:
We receive many requests for information on German veterans here. I thought it wise to post the link to the WASt. Please add other sites to the list, which may be useful.

A very good idea John!

Here's the website for the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. which is very useful for finding information about german soldiers that died during the war, specifically where they died and where they're buried.

http://www.volksbund.de/

Hello!
The list above is not correct anymore.
For instance, "Arbeitskreis ehem. 20. Infanterie-Division (mot) ,
Dietwart Asmus". Mr Asmus has been dead for some years.

Dear All,
I'm currently in the process of attempting to find veteran German Army tank drivers who fought in the Ardennes offensive. Can anyone give me any useful information in this quest? The Canadian film company for whom I'm conducting this research are planning to make a film about tanks in the Battle of the Bulge. I'll be attending a meeting in Vossenack on the 12th October of the 116th Panzer 'Windhund' veterans. Are there other Panzer division who hold annual meetings? All information gratefully acknowledged.

Best regards Martin

Hello Matthias!
Thank you very much for your response. My focus is specifically on Bavaria. I am looking to see if a particular Freikorps von Epp member served in a Bavarian unit during the First World War. Thanks again, and thank you for supporting this site. I support it as well, but unfortunately the Paypal is under my wife's name, so it looks like she supports the site. :D Which I suppose she does since she listens to me ramble incessantly about the First World War. Take care!

Yours,
Nick

Hi Nick!
I`m Bavarian or better to say Franconian. There`s a little difference  . Ritter von Epp had been in the 9th and 19th Infantry-Regiment prewar. He had been in China too (1900). I don`t know what he did during WWI, but he was even awarded the Pour le Merite. His Freikorps went in the Reichswehr. Nice to meet You, Nick.
Best Regards
Matthias

Hello Matthias!
I hope that all is well in your part of Germany.:) Thank you for the information on Oberst von Epp. I have a bit about him here, but I can't seem to locate a roster for his Lieb Regiment or his Freikorps. I have a photoalbum from one Hans Thanner, an artilleryman in the Fr. von Epp, and I was hoping to do a little more background work. What's your main interest?
