Searching for info on my grandfather Johann ( Hans) Karl Schmidt born in Worms on July 16,1917. He served in the Hitler Youth from July 33 to July 34. He served to.periods in the RAD from July 34 to March35 and Oct 35 to Marc37. He joined the SS(SS#342 344) and the SS/VT on Nov1,1937.Assigned to 4./ Deutschland wherehe served until mid-June1942.Promoted to Unterscharfuhrer on Nov1,1941 , he took part in the Poland, Western Balkans and 1st Russian Campaigns,where he was wounded twice(July 26 and Nov22,1941). Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class in France and Iron Cross 1st Class in Russia on March 31,1942. He served as a Guppenfuhrer from Oct 15, 1940 and later as a temporary Zugfuhrer in mid-June 1942, Schmidt was reassigned to the 3. Kompanie, where he was commissioned for bravery in the field, without attending officer courses to Unterstrumfuhrer d.R.on Nov9, 1944 while still assigned to the division. He was awarded the German Cross in Gold on Sept 16,1943 for participating in a tank trap on the Russian front. After the war he spent two years in a French run jail on the Reine in Germany and after the trials he voluntarily joined the war he was offered the French Foreign Legion or 4 plus years in Bordeaux as a POW. He took POW. He moved to Vancouver BC Canada with his wife and 3 sons in 1957. Had one daughter in Canada. Died in min 1993.
