Oberleutnant in Stalingrad

Post by swsudet »

Hello,

I'm looking for information on Oberleutnant Wilhelm Willmitzer.

His last unit was 11./Gren.Rgt.131 and he apparently lost his life storming the Kommissarhaus
in Stalingrad, leading Sturmkompanie 44 as Leutnant (maybe posthumous promotion to OLt).

I only by chance learned of him through the german war graves commission. The surname is
very uncommon and he is very probably a relative of mine.

Because of the costs associated with it and the uncertain relatedness Ill try my luck here before
contacting the Wast.

It _seems_ there is some information on him in some australian book "Island of Fire" but which
would be hard for me to aquire.

I'll be glad for any piece of information provided,

thank's in advance!

FROM ISLAND OF FIRE:
Willmitzer, Oberleutnant Wilhelm, 11./GrRgt131; Born27 Jan 1918 in Krakau. KIA 13 Nov, 1942 in Stalingrad (pg 41)

It does talk about the Lt a little bit here and on various other pages, where they are now part of Sturmkompanie 44. It is also with Sturmkompanie 44 that Lt Wilhelm Willmitzer was KIA while storming the Kommissarhaus.

Sturmkompanie Biography: (pg581)
Willmitzer, Oberleutnant Wilhelm-Zugfuhrer, Sturmkompanie 44.ID; Born 27 Jan 1918 in Krakau.
WKK XVII. WBK Wien I [Erk.Marke 11/Sch.KpI.R.316-239-] Began war in Inf Rgt 132. Promoted to Lt (RDA 01.06.1942). Later Kompanierfuhrer 11./Inf.Rgt 131. KIA 13 Nov, 1942 in Stalingrad. Posthumous promotion to Oberleutnant 23 Oct 1943.

I am sure that the authour, Jason Makr (a member on the site here) might have more info if you ask.
Only he is lost who gives himself up as lost.

I'm the author of "Island of Fire". I put a lot of time and energy into finding any information about Oblt. Wilhelm Willmitzer... it was difficult, and not too much was found. I was in contact via email with one of his relatives (a niece or grand-niece), but despite her initial willingness to help and many requests from me, nothing was forthcoming from her.

swsudet, I'm interested to know where you discovered that Lt. Willmitzer was killed during the attack on the Kommissarhaus. I discovered this fact from a document I received from WASt and as far as I am aware, the Kommissarhaus is mentioned nowhere else in regards to Willmitzer. If you contact me offline, I can send you scans of what I received from WASt.

All the best,
Jason Mark
