General Dietl

Post by captnenglish »

I'm working on a portrait of General Eduard Dietl, but cannot find any information on his eye and hair color Ca. 1940.

Well, that's usually what life does...

Here's another colour photograph of Eduard Dietl that will give you an idea of his hair colour. It was originally posted on Axis History Forum by AHF member "ttvon". The Luftwaffe Oberleutnant to Dietl's left is Konrad Knabe (a future RKT on 16.04.1943 as a Kettenführer with the Aufklärungsstaffel 1.(F)/124 (Kette Lappland), this according to AHF member "joerg". The Heer Officer is unidentified but Dietl's Signals Officer Oberleutnant Fürst Windisch-Grätz has been suggested by AHF member "Juha Hujanen".

Nope, haven't got any colour photographs of von Pannwitz but will keep my eyes open. Will post here when I find any...

You realize that you must post your Dietl portrait right here in this very thread of yours!

Hello again captnenglish!

The only colour illustration of Helmuth von Pannwitz that I've seen is this book cover for John R. Angolia's "On the Field of Honor: A History of the Knight's Cross Bearers - Volume 2" (1980). I've read somewhere (over at Axis History Forum maybe) that it's a portrait of von Pannwitz and it sure looks like him, Eichenlauben and all. Angolia just states that the cover illustration is "Courtesy U.S. Army (Captured War Art Collection).

"On the Fields of Honor - Volume 2"

This was the second volume of a planned seven volume series that John R. Angolia was going to write for Bender Publishing but so far only Volume 1 (1979) and Volume 2 (1980) have been published... Quite difficult and expensive to find these days but I think these books where the first ambitious books on the Ritterkreuzträger published in english back then.

Servus Captnenglish,

Is the 1/8th scale bust of Dietl a kit for sale or something you sculpted? I'd be interested in getting one if it's a kit.

It's an OOP kit (actually 200mm) as is my Von Pannwitz (Cossacks in German service is my fave subject). BTW, where did you acquire the replica Narvik shield and cap badge? Since you've done the 120mm Dietl, are you aware of the 54mm version (also by Verlinden)

Grüß Gott Captnenglish,

Is the 200mm bust an old Verlinden one? I have the 54mm Dietl too. I also had a friend of mine in Taiwan sculpt a 1/6th scale head of Dietl for an action figure...just waiting to be painted....here's a photo, but the flash washed out the face:

As to the replica Narvik shield, try Hessen Antique:

The cap Edelweiss is an original....I've been collecting Gebirgsjäger militaria for almost 30 years!
