Hello again!

The only facts that I found after some searching on the Net is a Major Gomille that commanded the heavy (Tigers) III./Pz.Rgt. "GD" between June 1943 and April 1944. No explanation why he left this command in April 1944. Maybe someone with axcess to more specialized sources on GD might find something. I was thinking on the three volume series by Helmuth Spaeter. Anyhow, here's some sources that I found, and the second one contains a lengthy report written by Major Gomille on August 31, 1943. I do hope it's the same Gomille...

Btw, Herbert Gomille recieved the German Cross in Gold on 14.02.1942 as a Hauptmann commanding 5./Pz.Rgt. 4.

Hello to all :D; a little complement................

Herbert Gomille.

Born August 15, 1913 in Waldmohr (Kreis Kusel). Son of Oberwerkfuhrer (rank equivalent to Oberfeldwebel in the Reichsbahn) Theodor Gomille. In 1933 he joined the Kavallerie Regiment 7 as a volunteer, in 1935 Leutnant joined the Panzer Regiment 4 (PR 4). As Oberleutnant he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class in Poland (Sep 29, 1939) and the Iron Cross 1st Class (May 23, 1940). In February 1942 he received the Deutsche Kreuz in Gold.

He took part in Operation Barbarossa as Hauptmann and Chief of the 5./PR 4. Then.....Hptm Herbert Gomille was the senior ranking company commander, so he took over the battalion (II./ PR 4). I was the senior lieutenant in the 5th Company, so I took over the company....... We were to attack southwest in the direction of Dnepropetrovsk on the Dniepr River. [On August 21, 1941,] we were still well outside the city on a slight hill when we received some fire. Downhill, about 1,000 yards away, there was a hedge where about an equal number of Russian T-34s were facing us. We had approximately 30 panzers left, about 10 in each company. On the left side was the 7th Company under aLt. Weichselbaum with 10 Panzer IIIs. In the center was my company (Hertenstein) with about 10 Panzer IVs. The 8th Company under Oblt. Gehrig was on the right with about 10 Panzer IIIs with 5cm guns........ My company would lay a smoke screen in front of the Russians before we attacked. We would then advance full speed ahead and fire every gun and machine gun like crazy..................Then we got the order from our battalion commander, Hptm Herbert Gomille, verbatim: “Battalion, full speed ahead! I’ll see you down by the hedge or in heaven!”

Gomille held the rank of Hauptmann and in September 1942 he was commander of the II. / PR 4 of 13. Pz Div when in a furious battle against Soviet tanks, together with Hauptmann Barth who commanded the 1. / Pz. Jg. Abt.13, managed to destroy as many as 33 enemy tanks in three days. He was decorated with the Knight's Cross for this action (October 25, 1942). On May 5, 1943 he was in the Panzertruppenschule Wünsdorf, but only a few months later (July 10, 1943) was promoted to Kommandeur III. Schwere-Abteilung (Tiger) / Panzer-Regiment “Grossdeutschland”. On March 10, 1944, Gomille was recalled from the front and became a member of the staff of Inspector der Panzertruppen.
