F M Gerd von Rundstedt

Post by Luftmann »

Greetings,

Most photos of F M von Rundstedt show him wearing the collar tabs of, I think, an officer of infantry rather than the usual General Staff insignia.

I beleive this was because he was Colonel in Chief of a regiment, (18th Infantry Regt.?).

Can anyone expand of this for me? Surely other General Staff officers also were Cols in Regiments.

Luftmann.

Indeed they were. A Lot of the senior (or retired) German offers were allowed to continue carrying the uniform of a Regiment or as in Rundstedt's case an Honorary Colonel-in-Chief or in German Chef des Infanterie-Regiments 18.

Notables are GFM Werner von Blomberg (Chef des Infanterie-Regiments 73)

The Austro-Hungarian GFM Böhm-Ermoli was made Honorary German GFM and Chef des Infanterie-Regiments 28

Werner von Fritsch, the ex Army C-in-C was appointed Chef des Artillerie-Regiments 12 at his retirement and was supposedly killed in action as a volunteer for that unit in Poland.

There were others such as Ritter von Leeb who is often photographed wearing collar tabs of a colonel.

The slightly lower honour was Being Allowed To The Carry The Uniform or Erlaubnis zum Tragen der Uniform of a Regiment, bestowed on notables such as Wilhelm Adam Erlaubnis zum Tragen der Uniform des Gebirgsjäger-Regiments 98 and Ludwig Beck Erlaubnis zum Tragen der Uniform des Artillerie-Regiments 5 and below pictured General der Kavallerie z.V. Curt Ludwig Freiherr von Gienanth as a General of Cavalry Carrying the uniform of of Reiter-Regiment 13

Hope this helps somewhat.

Hello Gareth,

Thanks for the info and for the additional information on "Being allowed to carry the uniform" I'd not heard of that before.

If Rundstedt was wearing his "General Staff" FMs uniform with the GS collar tabs would he have the white edging (Waffenfarb) as per the Infantry jacket or would that only apply to his Col in Chiefs jacket?

Basically the honest answer is Whatever He Wanted. The Senior German officers often wore different uniforms & insignia, sometimes without order (Wilhelm Falley often wore a Luftwaffe cap). Most had their own uniforms tailored and picked. Rundstedt & Leeb wore the complete uniforms of a serving Oberst, they were so senior, a confusion on their Ranks was impossible to a soldier, with the Baton then only thing noticable to an outsider. But often they did wear the Shoulder Epoulettes of a GFM. Only on official ceremonies was the proper uniform often used.
