Panzertruppenschule

Post by Dale »

Hello - I'd like some clarifications on the information below. Can anyone help verify and/or correct the below information?
Thanks in advance!
Dale

"The Waffenschule or Weapons Training School, was actually the Panzertruppenschule in Wünsdorf which consisted of several courses: Technische Lehrgänge (mechanics training), Offiziersanwärterlehrgänge (officer’s school), Schießlehrgänge (gunnery school at Putlos at Oldenburg/Holstein), and the Panzerlehrregiment (the cadre of the various courses)."

Weapons-School is a misleading translation for Waffenschule. Waffe in this case is used in the same sense of Truppe, so it is an umbrella term refering to the collection of training courses for a specific branch of service. Better to translate it as the Branch School.
The full array of courses and locations for Panzertruppen training evolved during the war, just as the organization and deployments of the Panzerlehr units did, so what you have there is just valid for a specific period. I don't know if that matters depending on what you are t rying to do with that paragraph.

My grandfather was in the Panzerlehrregiment (sometimes also written Panzer-Lehrregiment) in Wünsdorf in 1938-39. In case that helps you with the dates, refering to Frederick's comment. The Panzerlehrregiment then participated in the battle of France, may 1940.

I am looking for any information on the Panzer-Lehrregiment (Wünsdorf, France), and the Afr. Schtz. Regiment 963 (Heuberg, Paros-Greece) in which my grandfather, Leutnant Ludwig Preller served. Thanks.

No my grandfather was reported missing in March 1945 in Hungary, which is why I try to find out more about the different units he was in. My family has a few letters and photographs, amongst which some of his Panzerlehrregiment period in Wünsdorf and France.

Very cool Larry - thanks for those -- Some of the buildings are exactly the type I lived in when stationed in Aschaffenburg.
Thanks,
Dale
