OoB of High Commands

Post by Alecci »

Don't know if I phrased this question correctly... I'm looking for a complete listing and description of all the departments, branches and sections as well as their chiefs of respectively OKW, OKH, OKL and OKM.

So far I've only managed to find one such OoB, on the following site:
http://www.skalman.nu/third-reich/

I should also state that I regrettably don't speak any German.
With kind regards

Some help...

Post by Doug Batson »

OK, here is my two cents. I've listed what I have for the OKH (includes the Army Weapons Office, Army Administration Office, Quartermaster General,
General Army Office, and the General Staff.

Some of the dates may be off or out of sequence. Also, where there is an question mark (?) that means I don't know who held that office.

Perhaps someone else on the forum can fill in the blanks...

Thanks,

Doug

Doug, thanks for sharing this list. It´s an awesome list.

Some corrections:
Bei der Deutschen Botschaft in Brusel und der Deutschen Gesandtschaft im Haag mit dem Sitz in Brussel
- Obtlt.Bruckmann
I think it´s a mistake. Bruckmann was in Sofia from 1937-1942. Rabe von Pappenheim was in BE/NL from 1937-1940.
Branch 12/12 Abteilung (Frd Heere West/Western Armies)

- GenMaj Ernst von Krause 1.8.32-5.40
- GenMaj Ulrich Liss 15.11.38-1.5.43
- Obst Frhr von Ronne 4.43-1944
- Obst Buerklin 15.8.44-8.5.45

I have no clue why Krause is mentioned. Liß was the first Dept. Leader from 1938 on.
Third Senior General Staff Officer/Oberquartiermeister III (O Qu III)
This grouping was responsible for organization

- Gen d Inf Otto Stapf 10.11.38-5.11.40
- Disbanded

General des Heeres beim Recihsmarchall und Ob d L

Gen d. Art Max Grimmeiss 1.12.41-10.7.44
Actually, OQuM II held the additional title "Verbindungsoffizier des Heeres beim RMdL & OBdL". Indeed, the Liaison Officers to the Air Force were Stapf (1.), Konrad (2.), Grimmeiß (3.).
Branch 10/10 Abteilung (Operational Planning and maneuvers)

Dealth with manuevers and operational planning. These duties were divided among a number of other agencies of the OKW and OKH, both at field headquarters and at the rear echelon.
- Gen d. Inf Kurt von der Chevallerie 12.10.37-15.8.38
- Gen d Inf Karl Allmendinger 10.11.38-15.10.39
- GenMaj Anton Glasl 15.01.40-2.9.41
- Karl Theodor Koerner 2.9.41-1.42
I think that´s a copy/paste error. Dept. No 10 ended with Allmendinger. Glasl and Koerner belong to the Transp. unit of OKH.
Stellv Chef des Generalstabs des Heeres
- Gen d Inf Gunther Blumentritt 17.1.42-22.9.42

That´s needless to say. The Oberquartiermeister I was always the Deputy Chief of General Staff. Blumentritt was Oberquartiermeister I.
Branch 1/1 Abteilung (Operations)

Concerned with operations, developed and disseminated basic tactical rules and methods of conducting warfare.
- GenMaj Hellmuth Stieff 10.11.38-9.39
- Gen d GebTr. August Winter 1.8.37-31.10.40
- Gen d Inf Hans von Grieffenberg 9.39-10.40
- GenLt Adolf Heusinger 1.10.40-6.44
- Obst Bogislav von Bonin 1.9.44-10.2.45
- GenMaj Ivo Thilo von Trotha 20.2.45-20.4.45
Ia
- GenMaj Heinz Brandt 1.11.40-20.7.44 (+Lazarett Rastenburg)
There is a mess from 1938-1940. Greiffenberg was the only Dept. Head this time. He took over from Erik-Oskar Hansen. He had a Gruppenleiter West (Winter August) and a Gruppenleiter Ost (Heusinger Adolf).
General der Luftwaffe beim Ob d H

Gen d. Flieger Waldemar Klepke (LW) 1.2.38-31.1.39
GL Gunther Lohmann 2.42-12.42
GM Karl-Henning von Barsewisch (LW) 28.11.42-8.5.45

Klepke was followed by Bogatsch.

More to follow.

Additionally:
Central Group/Zentral Amtsgruppe des Heereswaffenamts (Wa Z)

1 Oct 1937 - 1 May 1940: GL Dipl. Ing. Wilhelm Hartmann
1 Oct 1942 - 1 Sept 1944: GL Dipl. Ing. Paul Schricker
I think two Dept. are mixed up. DI Wilhelm Hartmann was Dept. Head Wa I Rü 8 (Organisation) this time.
Signal Branch/Nachrichtenabteilung (Wa Pruf 7)

April 1936 - March 1938: Willy Gimmler
Gimmler still held the position on 01.01.1939. I think he stayed there until 1941.
GM Dipl.Ing. Leo Zanssen
DI Zanssen was also Cdr. Heeres-Versuchsstelle Peenemünde.
Group for Ammunition Manufacture/Amtsgruppe fur Industrielle Rustung - Munition (Wa I Ru Mun)

I think the Group (Amtsgruppe) was the former Wa I Rü 3 (Mun) from 01.1940 on.
Kriegsakademie

Gen Curt Liebmann
1 Jan 1943 - 31 May 1944: GM Weckmann
1 June 1944 - May 1945: Gen d. Art Speth
Liebmann who led the Academy since the set up retired on 30.04.1939. Gen. d. Art. Eugen Müller took over on 01.05.1939.
Stellv Chef Allgemeinens Heersamt

15 Feb 1940 - 1 March 1941: Gen d. Kav. Karl Erick Koehler
1 March 1941 - ?: Oberst Hellmuth d. G. Reinhard
The 1st Chief of Staff was Gen. Maj. Haseloff (I think).

Re: Generale der ... vs. Inspekteure der ...
Until 26.08.1939 the structure was the following:

Insp. d. Inf. (In2): Ott Eugen

Insp. d. Nachr. Tr. (In7): Fellgiebel Erich
Ch. d. St., zugl. Dept. Ldr.: Thiele Friedrich

Insp. d. Eisenbahnpioniere (In10): Jacob Alfred
Ch. d. St., zugl. Dept. Ldr.: Will Otto

and so on .. so on .. so on

On 26.08.1939 there were created new Inspectors to be subordinated under the Reserve Army. The guys were retired Inspectors, resp. School Commanders (Thon).
Inf.: Roese
Art.: Grün
Pion. & E-Pion.: Hopff
Nachr. Tr.: Thon

The old Inspectors became General der ... directly under Brauchitsch and Halder.
Inf.: Ott
Art.: Brand (took over from Petzel)
Pion. & E-Pion.: Jacob
Nachr. Tr.: Fellgiebel

The Chiefs of Staffs of the Inspections are actually Dept. Leaders in the General Army Office.

Doug,

nevertheless a great list and helped me, too. I didn´t know the Dept. Head Training Dept. (Krebs) and I didn´t know the last Head of AGr. Heer- und Ersatzwesen (Weidemann). Thank you.
First Senior General Staff Officer/Oberquartiermeister I (O Qu I)

This office dealt with operations and related matters.

- Gen d Inf Carl Heinrich Stulpnagel 26.8.39-15.2.40

- Gen d. Pz Walther Wenck 22.7.44-17.2.45
- GenMaj Ivo Thilo von Trotha? 17.2.45-1.4.45
