Hello to all :D; more..................................

The schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654.

Kursk - In the attack.

July 7, 1943. The tank battle that started yesterday at the German focal point (main effort) is not over yet. In this conflict, the enemy has experienced severe losses with respect to men and tanks in relation to reasonable own losses. Only the XXXXVII Panzerkorps managed the destruction of 157 enemy tanks ... In the course of the afternoon, the enemy must give way to our armored vanguards after heavy losses, although the enemy tank front could not be completely broken. After all, the third enemy position was captured, we hope to make the best use of this situation during the next few days ..............

On July 7, the sPzJgAbt 654 as reserve of the Army Corps was located approximately 1 km east of Busuluk. According to a member of the Staff of sPz.Jäg. Reg.: intense artillery fire on both sides. Numerous aerial combats, a German plane made an emergency landing. We move to the most advanced positions. Artillery grenades exploded everywhere around us. The enemy retreated even more. Enemy aircraft launched a few bombs during the night ...................................

Hello to all :D; more..................................

The schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654.

Kursk - In the attack.

July 8, 1943. This day brings the continuation of the great Panzerschlacht (tank fight) at the focal point, and ended with a very tense situation, which can be extended to the first crisis of this battle. The attack of XXXXVII.Panzerkorps in the early hours of the morning, with the use of fresh 4. Pz, gained ground at the beginning ... During the second half of the day, the resistance of the enemy was growing and more resolved. Aerial photographs and a captured enemy map show that the decisive southwest ridge of Olchovatka, which was today's target, was reinforced by buried tanks, artillery positions and anti-tank guns in a heavily fortified system. In a first assault carried out by the Panzer, these positions could not be taken. To capture this ridge, which blocks the advance, a planned attack in depth will be needed with strong support from artillery and combined air power. A change in the weather during the afternoon completely stops the commitment of the Luftwaffe. At the same time, the armored spearhead faces strong attacks from concentrated enemy tanks. For this reason the attack was canceled. In the following hours, the tanks were inactive in front of the Russian positions, which fired from the crest with all the weapons - an undeniable failure of the brigade commander. This resulted in severe losses, including tigers. In addition, due to the counterattacks of the enemy, the isolated armored units were dispersed, since the respective commanders lost control ...

In the morning hours of July 8, the 2nd Company of sPzJgAbt 654 was taken out with six operational "Ferdinand" and some assault tanks for an attack on Ponyri. However, the planned attack was postponed to the next day...........................

According to a member of the Staff of the sPzJgReg.: intense artillery fire on both sides. Enemy attack reinforced by tanks. Several hostile armored vehicles destroyed. Intense air activity itself. We move forward again and occupy a fortification. Several enemy planes were shot down...................................

Hello to all :D; more..................................

The schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654.

Kursk - In the attack.

July 8, 1943. The Oberbefehlshaber, General Model (OB - supreme commander) has to face a dilemma, if the next day:

to. The attack will continue according to the plan
b. or with a different mode of action,
c. or temporarily move to the defense to prepare a new attack on July 10 ... '

This was, in fact, the end of the 9th Army's offensive in the north of the Kursk salient. The impetus of the attack was lost; the flanks of the spearhead were attacked. While the few German reserves were worn out, the Russians were able to bring new forces. According to the military war diary, the western flank was threatened by 70 Soviet tanks, and the eastern flank by 100 enemy tanks.

'... The OB made the serious decision to stop the attack on the crest in this fatal situation to reorganize the units by removing parts of the 4.Pz Div and improve the initial situation for a successful new attack on July 10 ... The critical situation in Ponyri can be solved with the help of the Ferdinand ......

Hello to all :D; more..................................

The schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654.

Kursk - In the attack.

July 9, 1943. The fifth day of the battle brought a pause, caused by the development of the situation of the previous day .... Model, Zeitzler and Busch, the Superior Commander of the Heeresgruppe Mitte
(Army Group Center) realized that fierce and skillful Soviet resistance, coupled with the very special conditions found at Kursk had frustrated the (once) successful German combat tactics. Model demanded a greater concentration of the exhausted German forces to break through the positions of the ridge. However, it was obvious that a new advance would slow down.

From the war diary: '... Even after clearing the ridge, we expect a very slow advance, consequently, we will not be able to reach the final goal Kursk in time. The battle constitutes a new chapter of a "war of attrition" since it is only an absolute question of the number of men, material and ammunition. Without continuous and sufficient logistical support, a successful conclusion of this operation will not be possible ... The Army Group agrees with this assessment, but underlines the need to win this battle to annihilate the growing number of Russian reserves ... '

sPz.Jäg.Abt. 654: while that day around 06:00 hours, attacked the Kampfgruppe (Combat Group) led by Maj. Kahl and managed to break into the system of the defensive position of the enemy and also managed to destroy several howitzers and anti-tank weapons.

According to a member of the HQ of sPz.Jäg. Reg .: intense artillery fire. We move in open terrain. Enemy artillery falling around us. The staff vehicle rolled over a mine and was out of service, its crew fights against Soviet infantry. We move to help them. I stay behind in a trench as the lieutenant and the driver move forward to the enemy and both were seriously injured, but the driver was able to bring the vehicle to our lines. The vehicle was hit several times by Soviet anti-tank rifles. A noncommissioned officer took the vehicle further to the rear.

Hello to all :D; more..................................

The schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654.

Kursk - In the attack.

July 10, 1943. The war diary said: "Today is the sixth day of the battle and the tense situation turned into a crisis, which began to show yesterday, is the first crisis in this battle, despite the redeployment and reorganization of the attack forces, despite the support of all artillery weapons and despite combining with the deployment of the Luftwaffe, we have not achieved the objectives in the focal point ... We must admit that the German assault got stuck. .. '

(On this day the Allies launched Operation "Husky", invading Sicily on the Italian front and Operation Citadel was canceled by the Germans).

July 11, 1943. ... However, the energetic and successful counterattack of the XXIII. Armeekorps (78. Sturmdivision), with the support of Ferdinands in the Trosna area shows the speed and
the superiority of the German troops over the "Red" adversary.......

sPz.Jäg.Abt. 654: During the following days, the unit constituted a reserve for defense against enemy tank attacks in the Maloarchangelsk-Busuluk Station area.

According to a member of the HQ of sPz.Jäg. Reg .: July 10. We move to a rest area for three days. There are still intense artillery fires and numerous aerial combats ..................................

July 11. We occupy the resting area. Several enemy planes shot down. The Luftwaffe attacked the enemy at 6:00 p.m. We observed the attack very well and we were able to count at least 100 Stukas, a squadron of Ju-88 and another of He-111. Dense clouds of smoke over enemy positions. The attack lasted an hour and a half. Intense artillery fire throughout the day .....................
