Deutsche Militärmission in Rumänien, 1940

Post by CNE_EMB »

Hello Feldgrauians!

I begin my participation to the forum under my new pseudo (the previous one being definitively lost) with a question concerning the organization of the German military mission in Romania, sent in this country from October 1940 and on.

First of all, what was the official name of its naval component, under Vizeadmiral Werner Tillessen authority? I guess it should have been Deutsche Marinemission in Rumänien, later (1942) to be transformed in Marineverbindungsstab, but can someone confirm this point?

Then, does anyone know what were the antiaircraft artillery battalions sent in Romania in the first weeks? Halder spoke in his diary of a regiment with three battalions (one mixed, two light ones). I guess that the regimental staff was the Flak-Regimentsstab 180 (but it could have been the 202), but I have no clue concerning its subordinated battalions... Anyone can help?

To conclude this first post, if I'm pretty sure that the first fighter squadron sent in Romania was the 3./Jagdgeschwader 28 (previously 9./Jagdgeschwader 52), I'm not totally sure concerning the two first recon squadrons which should have been two of the following ones: 2.(Heeres)/Aufklärungsgruppe 10, 3.(Heeres)/Aufklärungsgruppe 13 and 1.(Heeres)/Aufklärungsgruppe 23. I guess the two first ones were the good ones, but I'm not 100% sure, so if someone can help on this too...

Thank you very much in advance!
I'm happy to be on Feldgrau again!
Cheers,

CNE EMB -

Roll 49 of NARA T-405 has the DLM Rumaenien material for fall 1940 through fall 1941. If the answers to your questions are anywhere, they would be in this roll.

Hi CNE EMB,

Go to this website and in the menu on the left side of the page click on "Order Reproductions". Be very specific about what you want: Record Group 242, Microcopy T-405, roll 49.

Hi again CNE EMB,

Here is Option #2:

Go to the link below.

http://www.ww2.dk/Airfields%20-%20Romania.pdf

After it opens, right click. In the box that opens you will see "Find". Click on "Find". In the little Find window, enter the following one at a time:

Flak-Abt. (each of these will show a date. Keep clicking the down arrow for the next selection.)
Aufkl.Gr. (each of these will show a date. Keep clicking the down arrow for the next selection.)
etc.

I am the author of Luftwaffe Airfields 1935-45 - Romania so I know the information is correct.

Lorenz

P.S.:
le.Flak-Abt. 861 (mot) was the first one stationed in Romania.
By April 1941, 6 (H) Aufkl.Staffeln were in Romania, with 3.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 13 being the first one.

Nice! As it is not the topic of your book, information concerning the Flak units is not sufficiently detailed for my researches. But it is excellent concerning the Romanian air infrastructure at this time!

Thanks a lot for the link, it is very helpful!

Hello to all :D; a little complement...............................

The DHM in Romania!

From 22 October 1940 onwards, the 13. Pz Div moved as teaching (Lehr) troops to Romania in the area Brasow - Roman - Bacau - Ploesti. In Romania, the Division received the designation of "Lehrstab R", and by December 10, 1940, "Lehrstab R I of the German troops in Romania". This division was followed during the winter of 1940-1941 by the 16. Pz Div as "Lehrstab R II"

Hello to all :D; a little more...............................

The DHM in Romania!

The PR 2 as a Training Unit (Lehr-Truppe).

In late December 1940, the armored regiment was designated as training unit for the troops of the Romanian army and therefore moved through southern Germany, Austria, Hungary to Romania. On Christmas Eve 1940, the first elements of the regiment were transported and detrained in Mediaş and Sighişoara (Schäßburg). The Regimental HQ and the HQ of the I. Abteilung (Detachment) took their accommodation in Mediaş, while the HQ of II. Abteilung was lodged in Sighişoara (Schäßburg). The companies were distributed, respectively, in the surrounding villages. After a period of training in Romania, the HQ of the regiment and II. Abteilung moved south. Tanks and wheeled vehicles rolled in laborious marches through the oil region of Ploesti - Umpina on Bucharest-Sinaia and reached the Danube at Girgiu.

Hello,

I guess I found an interesting track concerning the Flak units deployed early in Romania in 1940-1941.
It is the following documents microfilmed by NARA under Serial number 272, Roll 272, Item 27638/7, entitled "Folder of unknown provenance, containing directives, correspondence, file memoranda, organizational charts and newspaper clippings, Oct-Nov 1940, pertaining to the establishment of a German military mission in Romania.
I found it in NARA guide T733 R2 Guide 38 (http://downloads.sturmpanzer.com/guides ... ide_38.pdf), p.146.

Could someone give me some advices to buy it?
Cheers,

Hello CNE:
Since you have the exact designation of what you want to purchase, why not call the NARA and order them by phone?? It is much easier than trying to wade one's way through the NARA website, or sending a letter. Best wishes.
