Hard day for the IR 188 - 1939.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; taking advantage the story dealing with the fighting at Osiek here goes a query about the IR 188 belonging to the 68 ID, which marched due north of the 27 ID.............

Schwerer tag für die IR 188.

On September 11, 1939 in the evening bivouac at Niedrzwice and then march towards Klimontow.

On September 12, 1939 march for Cezichnic - Koprzywnica (6 kms west of the Vistula) - Cisyca (on the Vistula). It was a tough day for the IR 188. At dusk on the embankment strong shocks. We are relieved of combat and Detachment Knalla was moved ahead. At dusk we reached Cisyca on the embankment of the Vistula and stayed there for the night.

On September 13, 1939. At 04:00 hours we took position along the embankment with the enemy on the banks of the Vistula. With my Platoon (le IG 75 mm) opened fire on Tarnobrzeg. In the afternoon elements of engineers across the river, we stood as security. The Vistula was very sandy here, with a strong current. On the night watching at the weapons. The rest fell into a deep sleep.

Anyone has on hand more info about the fights by Koprzywnica (6 kms west of the Vistula) - Cisyca (on the Vistula)?. TIA. Cheers. Raúl M 8).

Hello to all :D; a little complement....................

Fights by Koprzywnica.

As you can see the IR 188 (68 ID - black trace) fought due north and more or less at the same time that IR 91 (27 ID - blue trace).

Could you shed some light on your source? Is there anything more in it about Polenfeldzug?

Lovely :D

There's next to nothing written about 68. ID in Polen, which makes these "Kriegstagebuecher" even more precious.

Thank you kindly

Hello to all :D; a little more....It seems that the IR 188 got all the troubles in Poland.........

Combat at Suchowola - 23/24 September of 1939.

In the night from 23 to 24 September 1939, the battalion (II. / IR 196) encamped in Hutkow (Hutki) and established a strong safety (one third of the strenght). To the south rose the flares and it was observed the flashes of artillery. Around 24:00 we rest. Meanwhile it began to rain.

At 3:30 hours we were awakened. There was a fierce battle noise, especially in the wooded area north of our position, towards Suchowola, where it seemed that hell had broken loose. At 04:20 hours arrived at CP of the II. / IR 196 one Oberstleutnant completely disturbed and anguished with his Adjutant (of the I. / IR 188), his battalion had suffered heavy casualties in Suchowola. About 70 dead and countless wounded. One own counterattack had not been successful. I took firing position with my Platoon (IG 75 mm) and at 05:00 hours opened fire in the direction of the wooded area that extended due northeast of our position, where our observers had spotted hostile riflemen and riders (Nowogrod Cavalry Brigade ). Soon the artillery joined us.

Hello to all :D; last part.........

Combat at Suchowola - 23/24 September of 1939.

The I.G. Platoon attached to the I. / IR 188 had received strong punishment. By the time Leutnant K managed to rescue a gun, a horse and a handful of men, the rest were unaccounted for. We retired in an orderly and planned manner. In Height 287 was established a position for receiving the I. / IR 188, and then to break contact with the enemy.

We drove through the forest towards Jacnia (3 km south of Potoczek). Shortly before Potoczek (between Adamow and Suchowola about 16 kms SW of Zamosc), which we had surpassed yesterday, the column which was marching ahead received fire. Immediately the medium Platoon and my Platoon occupied position on a slope with a slight gradient. Our grenades fell on the eastern exit of the town and the wooded area that stretched beyond and the hostile shooters were silenced. The Battalion continued the march to Adamov - Blizow.
