Hello to all :D; after a while, here goes what I can gather about the 2 Gebirgsdivision in 1939...............

The 2 Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

The 2 GD (Innsbruck) was commanded by Generalleutnant Valentin Feurstein (Ia Oberstleutnant Degen), it was organized on the basis of the 6 Austrian Infantry Division and comprised two regiments of mountain hunters: the GJR 136 of Tyrol (Oberst Nake) and the GJR 137 (Oberst Schlemmer), a mountain artillery regiment: the GAR 111, plus the AA 111; the Geb Pi Btl 82, the NA 67 and the Pz Jag Abt 47.

For this campaign the division was subordinated to the XVIII Geb AK (General der Infanterie Eugen Bayer) within the 14 AOK (Generaloberst Wilhelm List). The 2 GD was ordered to cross the international boundary near Biala Spiska, in the Beskids, in the valley of the Dunajec and then was to follow the shortest route to Lemberg / Lwow.

The 2 Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

8 Sep 1939.

The three ON battalions "Nowy Sacz", "Gorlice" and "Sambor" in the rear of the Polish 2nd Mountain Brigade which were retreating towards Krościenko Wyżne, fought during the morning at Jasło against the GJR 136 commanded by Oberst Albin Nake. All German attacks were repulsed. Strong German artillery fire caused heavy losses to the second battalion, 1 pp KOP "Carpathian", which lost half of the officers.

By noon the Polish regiment was ordered to stop fighting and withdraw in the direction of Krosno. However, breaking contact of the enemy during the day was not easy, the regiment suffered more significant losses due to enemy artillery fire. In the afternoon, the regiment reached Świerzowa Polska and Suchodół and began preparing defensive positions there.

The GJR 137 marched through the recent battlefields, seeing the corpses of Polish soldiers still lying on the ground. In Krosno they could see bomb craters and downed planes and then the march proceeded into the open till reach the San; it was ordered a stop at Uluc.

The troops of the 2. GD marched south, reaching the San in Jablonica Ruska and further south in Uluc. The attack was successful and the gebirgsjägern forced the crossing over San. The II. / GJR 137 (Oberstleutnant Sorko) established a bridgehead, the III. / GJR 137 ( Oberstleutnant Matthias Kräutler) blocked the intersection of roads located about 4 km of the river, while the GJR 136 controlled the hill south of Jawornik Ruski.

September 12.

The 24 PD fought with the 2 GD in the area of Bircza, where the two battalions of the 2nd Mountain Brigade and the artillery of the unit played a key role. The German mountain hunters attacked the rear units of the 24 DP, which caused difficulties in the supply.

Nevertheless the Polish could not stop the opponent on the river San, which was crossed already on September 09, 1939 by the Kampfgruppe "Geiger" by Sanok, the next day (September 10) by the 4th Light Division in Radymno and the 2. GD by Ulucz.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

September 14.

On September 14, 1939 very worn out by the fighting and marches, the 24 DP occupied an assembly area around: Tyszkowice, Boratycze, Chodorowice and Popowice, being attacked there by the 2 GD. A strong attack was rejected at Boratycze by the 155 res. pp and the I. Battalion of the 39 pp.(Infantry Regiment - pulk piechoty).

The German mountain's infantry was halted and the vanguard, composed of the III. / GJR 137 and the Regimental HQ were cut from the rest of the division. The vanguard, without adequate intelligence, entered the wooded area and soon the situation became critical, at risk of being destroyed after it was ambushed by Polish marksmen deployed in the tops of the trees.

The 2. / GJR 137 which preceded in the march to the 4. / GJR 137 was ambushed by scattered Polish riflemen who were retreating and suffered the first casualties, Hauptmann Frank and 3 other gebirgsjägern were killed in combat. There were also casualties by sickness (dysentery), some of whom perished, while others were evacuated to hospital with serious foot injuries. The march continued for Rudki and Komarno.

Only the timely arrival of the II. / GJR 137 and the I / GJR 136 (Oberstleutnant v. Stettner) has helped control the situation. It was the day the 2 GD suffered the most casualties in the whole campaign of September 1939. At 21:00 hours the Polish division interrupted the fight and retreated to the woods near the railway station at Chrosnika.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

September 15.

The status of the 1 GD, well ahead in relation to the main force of the 14 German Army, was very difficult. its only line of communication from Sambor to Chyrow was at stake. The nearest unit, the 2 GD, only left the area around Husakowa, making forced marches by Rudki, Lubień, and had to travel about 90 km, equivalent to 2-3 days of marching along rough roads. The XXII AK (Mot) of General E. von Kleist, seeking the conquest of Rawa Ruska, marched north and northeast: the 4 Le Div on Vladimir Volhynia, and 2 Pz to Zamosc.

The XVII AK fought by Oleszycami against the Polish 21 Infantry Division. General Kübler seeing that their units were scattered and significantly decreased the strength to stop the push of the Polish by Gródkiem Jagiellońskim organized battle groups "Zimmer", "Utz" and "Kress". Thus, the forces of the 1 GD fighting against Lviv were reduced to 5 battalions and four batteries of heavy artillery on the perimeter of 25 km around the city, with only a reserve battalion in Zimnej Wodzie.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

September 19, 1939.

The Germans had not seized Lemberg/Lwow yet. Disputes between Germans and Russians for the possession of the city led to clashes between the two aggressors armies (?). Before noon on September 19, 1939 the hunters of the GJR 137 belonging to the 2 GD marched to Winnik, a town that already had been occupied by the Soviets and collided with units of the Red Army (?). (As told by Wojciech Wlodarkiewicz)

On both sides, west and east, the Polish defenders fought doggedly with reconnaissance patrols of both invaders, who were seeking information in preparation for a new offensive. The next German assault on Lemberg/Lwow would begin at 11:00 hours on September 21, 1939; the 7. ID would attack from the north, the 1. GD from the south and parts of it from the west finally the 2. GD from the southeast.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

The XVIII Geb AK under General Beyer was preparing to launch the final assault on the city with three divisions. Previously, the Army Corps Commander would require the surrender to General Langner on September 21, 1939 at 10:00 hours with the threat that if the city continued its resistance would be destroyed.

On September 20, 1939 the press in the city of Lwow issued some news about the withdrawal of Soviet formations of the boundaries of the city in order to deploy the troops against the Germans. All that day the representatives of the Red Army and the Wehrmacht contacted constantly each other.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

In Winniki was held a meeting between the Commander of the German 2. GD, General Feuerstein and the Chief of Artillery of the Ukrainian Front, N. D. Yakovlev. The Germans looked that the Soviet Army did not interfere with the planned attack on September 21 1939, while the Soviets wanted the Germans to cease the bombing of the city and retire to a distance of 12-15 kilometers west of Lemberg/Lwow, both requirements were incompatible.

The Commanding General of the 14 AOK, General List was not sure about continuing with the assault on the city, having received reports on the approximation of strong contingents of Polish troops from the north. At 20:00 hours the commander of the XVIII Geb. AK, following received orders decided to lift the siege of Lwow and then march westwards during the night of 20 to 21 September, 1939.
