Grenadier Rgt 212 / Southern Ukraine January -44

Post by siegfriedbusch »

I am trying to trace my grandfathers unit in southern Ukraine from the autumn of -43 to end of January -44. During this period he belonged to the 7./Grenadier Rgt 212. He was wounded in a location called Nowaja Tjaginka (Novotyahinka today) on the banks of the Dniepr river on 31.1.44 and after that spent some time in a hospital in Odessa. Has anyone heard of this location or have any information on this Regiment?

Siegfried,

Here is some information which might be of interest:
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... R212-R.htm
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... 79ID-R.htm

Note that there are also military records available at the Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv, Freiburg for the 79. Infanterie Division covering the period of Sep. 30th, 1943 to Jan 13th, 1944. The record number is RH 26-79: http://www.bundesarchiv.de/bestaende_fi ... chbegriff=.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Cheers,

Christian

Christian,
Many thanks for your helpful tips! Since posing my question I have found the wehrmacht lexikon, which is very informative, and have also found a book from the 1970's about the 79th Inf Div, "Der weg der 79 Inf Div", with maps showing the retreat routes.

best regards
Siegfried
