2.Panzer-Div, PzGr.Komp, Wacht am Rhein

Post by Tanker Mike »

Hello,

While re-fitting in the Fall of 1944, in preparation for the Wacht am Rhein offensive, I know the 2.Panzer-Division used the 01.04.1944 tables for the Panzer-Abteilung. What KStN dates did 2.Panzer use for the Panzergrenadier-Kompanies in the I.Bataillion of 2.Panzergrenadier-Regiment? The April 1944 or July 1944 tables? I am pretty sure they did not use the November 1944 tables.

Cheers,
Mike

Mike,

The 1.4.1944 set of KStN (f.G.) were all provisionally KStN, open to changes.
The KStN 1114 c (gp.) (f.G.) was changed indeed. The 1.4.1944 KStN was replaced with the 1.7.1944 KStN which became the standard KStN in the Panzer-Division 44.

Taken directly from a 14.12.1944 report, I can give you the following details:
SOLL 1.-3. Kp. (gp.)
11x 251/1
2x 251/2
2x 251/3
2x 251/9
6x 251/17

IST 1.-3. Kp. (gp.)
19x SdKfz 251/1
2x 251/2
1x 251/3
(the 1.-3. had the same IST)

The 1.11.1944 KStN were NOT used in 1944 as far as I know it. The first time I have seen so far these KStN were used was in February or March 1945.

Thanks for the information. So, just to be clear, in December of 1944 while refitting, the I.Battailon/2.PzGr-Regt would have used the July 44 tables for it's PzGr-Komp(gp)?
I am more interested in the actual KStN used not so much in what they had although that's good too!

Mike,

That IS the actual KStN they were using.

The bicycle companies in the I./ 304 were no 1.11.1944 KStN either, simply the 1.4.1944 KStN with changes.
Eventually, these changes and changed circumstances led to the appearance of the 1.11.1944 KStN.
But Mike, don't put your hopes on this date. There are many examples the date on a KStN is nothing more than a date, not meaning that on that specific date the KStN became effective.
The 1.11.1943 set of KStN (a direct result of the Führerbefehl to gain 1 million men) were not made in Oktober and November 1943. Nope, according to the Allgemeine Heeresmitteilungen, there were 1.11.1943 KStN introduced as late as March 1944. But still dated 1.11.1943.

Piet,

Okay, I get now. Expanding this further, what about the Stab/I.Bataillon/Pz.Gren. 2? That would be KStN 1108 dated 01.04.1944, correct?
