Post by Alex Coles »

Does anybody know what the 1.SS LAH Panzer did in the Korsun Pocket, because from data i have gathered it said that they were one of the "breakout" forces wich tried to Break-Out the forces of Group Stemmerman at Korsun/Her Airfield is this right, can someone continue this?

Yes , they belonged to the relief tank forces to tscherkassy , but they had not much effect . Only a few Panzergrenadiers of LAH made it to Lissjanka . Most effective here were 1.PzDiv. & sPzRgt. Bäke ...

I'm suprised they didn't have much effect since it was the first SS Panzer Division, but you said only a few Panzer-Grenadiers made it to Lissyanka, what happened to the Panzer Regiment, and Recon Battalion, slaughtered, spread out, thrown back, isolated?

The division had been decimated in the preceding months of action in the Ukrainian winter.

Hello!

Well, according to the divisional history that I have, the Leibstandarte were covering the Northern Flank of the Relief Attack so they had to hold back all of the Soviet attacks that were launched against the Relief Attack. As a result, not much of the division was available for the actual relief of the pocket itself, save for a few small Kampfgruppen.

There were three Kampfgruppen of the Leibstandarte that reached the area of Lyssjanka-Oktjabr. Kampfgruppe Sandig, Kampfgruppe Knittel and Kampfgruppe Heimann. These Kampfgruppen operated with the elements of the 1st Panzer Division that were in the area and Schwere Panzer Regiment Bake, which was also known as Panzergruppe Bake.

The 1st Panzer Division, 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte, 16th Panzer Division, 17th Panzer Division and Schwere Panzer Regiment Bake were all involved in the Relief Attack. It is true though, that all of these divisions were badly under strength from previous fighting, especially the Leibstandarte. Panzergruppe Bake represented the most powerful armoured element of the relief.

Cheers,

Wolfkin

Were the 1.SS on the 1st Ukrainian Front? And were their units in the relief attack Replaceable or Irreplaceable? But, with Kampfgruppen, what is the Size of a Kampfgruppe? Regiment, Company, Squadron, battalion, Brigade :?:

Involved LSSAH Kampfgruppen:
- Kuhlmann (reinforced Panzer-Regiment LSSAH)
- Heimann (reinforced Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung LSSAH)
- Sandig (reinforced Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment LSSAH)
- Knittel (reinforced Aufklärungs-Abteilung LSSAH)

Size depends on involved units and available personell. Especially with these decimated, battered units. On 19. FEB most remaining elements of the LSSAH Kampfgruppen and elements from the 1st panzer division were combined into Kampfgruppe Sandig.
