Any information regarding the 16th Panzer Division

Post by Vesper »

I have searched for information regarding the unit but all the books are in German. I do know that the unit appears in Stalingrad, Anthony Beevor.

Does anyone have any further details for this unit?

That'`s a pretty broad question. What do you want to know, specifically?

What exactly the Division took part in, whether they committed any warcrimes & anywhere where I might be able to find further information regarding the unit. A rough idea of how many men were in the unit, how many were killed, when & how. Any books that cover the unit in detail written in English. This is probably too much to hope for, but if anyone knows of books about another Panzer unit which has this kind of detail I would be interested.

Thankyou for your help

Thankyou Brian that's great :D

I now realise how large this task is so I have decided to limit my research into the units actions at Stalingrad.

My research so far shows that the unit fought in Stalingrad (Nov 1942 - Feb 1943) and that their Commander at this time was Generalleutnant Günther Angern (15 Sep 1942 - 2 Feb 1943) who took over from Generaloberst Hans-Valentin Hube who died in a plane crash.

Gunther Angern supposeably committed suicide in Stalingrad on 02.02.1943.

There were also a number of Knights Cross winners in the unit during the fighting at Stalingrad.

Hauptmann Armin Erdmann (Abteilung Commander)
Hauptmann Hermann Wilhelm Dormann (Abteilung Commander)
Leutnant Siegfried Gerke (Kompanie Commander)
Oberfeldwebel Wilhelm Gunther (Zug Commander)

& with oak leaves

Oberstleutnant Hyazinth Graf Strachwitz v. Gross-Zauche und Camminetz (Abt Commander)

If anyone knows any further details on how exactly the Division was destroyed, by whom & where I would be most interested. I shall also post any further information I find.

Thanks all for your help 8)

Günther Angern was a Generalmajor when he took command of the division, he was promoted to Generalleutnant on 1 Dec. '42. He replaced Generalleutnant Hans Hube when Hube moved up to command of XIV Pz.K. (Hube didn't die in that plane crash until a year and a half later!). Some sources say Angern committed suicide some say he was killed trying to break-out.

Winning the Knights Cross at Stalingrad, in addition to those you mentioned, were Oblt. Klaus Müller, Chef 6./Pz.Rgt.2 on 7.10.42, and Hptm. Friedrich August Graf von Brühl, 8./Pz.Rgt.2 on 3.11.42.

Welcome to Feldgrau !!

June 25th, 1941: German armoured forces (of Panzergruppe 1) capture Lutsk and Dubno in eastern Poland (USSR territory). 111 Inf.Div. was part of XXIX AK – AOK 6 – HGrp.Sud at this time.

Thank you Shadow, but it is too little. Of course I know where PzGr1 divisions located in june.
Some russian memoirs tells 34td temporary re-captured Dubno 28-29.06
I try to find any german documents about this date, 111th inf.div at Dubno and 16pz.div. near.

Also, that memoirs tells about night raid with captured Pz.3 tanks. Is 16th pz.div reported any friendly fire?

ps. Also, about capture 150mm howitzers (30.06 near Dubno, 12 cannon, destroyed in the end of day)

Hello to all :D; a little complement................................

The PR 2 in the siege of Uman.

The 16th Panzer Division broke through the heavily fortified Stalin Line west of Lubar. Subsequently, the Division headed south and into Ukraine, where it took part in the Battle of Uman.

The PR 2 was responsible for organizing a Kampfgruppe combining APCs, artillery, engineers and Flak. On July 21, 1941, the regiment reached Monastyrishche and later fought there for four days. The 6th Soviet Army reacted to the crisis and quickly deployed the 2nd and 24th Mechanized Corps to stop the 11th and 16th Panzer Divisions and thus prevent one envelop on its flank. Heavy fighting took place in Monastyrischtsche between 21 and 27 July 1941 and the town changed hands several times, but finally remained in the hands of the German division. Towards the end of July the Axis armies closed ranks on Uman and thus began the end in the fight in the siege.

Fascinating to relate, but the 16.PzDiv fought over this same terrain - Monastyryshche - in mid January 1944 during Operation Watutin / Waltraut!
