Oh, I know it couldn't have gone directly into that graphic. I was just thinking aloud, and more skewed than normal...

Ok, so it looks like this thread has died…does that mean the matter is settled? The Edelweiss symbol as favicon??

maybe you should ask Jason first...

In my humble opinion it is not the best choice.

But it is in my opinion. Let's create a poll about it.

Let's do *something* about it in any case. I thought people had offered all the suggestions that were forthcoming (and agreed that it was a good idea in general), so we might as well go ahead with what seemed to be the best proposal to me (the Edelweiss).

If the poster who *didn't* like the Edelweiss has something better, please say so. Even just an idea--they're not that difficult to create, and a snap if there's a preexisting graphic.

will do!

A poll... By all means. It will still be up to Jason in the end, so what ever we decide, choose or... Is still Jasons choice.

Hmmm, where to start? A favicon, logo, identity or what ever should
IMHO!!! reflect (in this case) the purpose of the site.

Feldgrau is in a sence an elite in cyper space but does not ONLY cover the elite
units of the Wehrmacht. That is basically my opposition to the Edelweiss.
To quote the main site header:
Feldgrau.com - research on the German armed forces 1918-1945
and here:
Feldgrau.net - the online message forum for the Feldgrau.com research community
so the identity, logo, favicon should reflect the Wehrmacht in general.
What has been mentioned so far? The helmet (not good as already mentioned)
the EK which another site already uses or just the ribbin colours, the Reichskokade - unfortunately too close to
the RAF, Jasons old avatar (a specific division!) and finally the Edelweiss.
I would suggest one of these to be taken into consideration too...

The tricolor helmet decal was used by all and symbolizes the armed forces so does the Balkan Kreuz
(probably already used..?) again because of its use by all branches.
The head of an eagle (from helmet decal). It was used (in this stylistic NS form) on just about everything concerning the Wehrmacht 1933-45, to be honest Germany 1933-45. It was a symbol of Germany before 1933, it is still a symbol of Germany.
Finally a simple Feldpost stamp. Why? Because it links several factors together. Every soldier had a family who posted or recieved post.
The FP-number assigned to units followed them through the war and as this is also where we post and answer fellow Feldgrauians posts it seems appropiate too.

Anyway something like this should be "polled" first.
937 views and 37 replies by 8-9 posters does'nt seem like much of a democracy
(although everyone has had the chance to comment the issue).
I don't think it has been properly addressed to all here on the forum, or not many really care as it is not really needed.

Waleed, I have a quick question.

Personally, I don't think a favicon serves any real purpose. All they seem to do is help you pick out one particular site on a list of sites. No big deal.

That said, is there anyway to find out if any other sites use any of the favicons you've posted?

I'll give you credit. Though I think the concept is almost useless, those ones look good.

Yes Tom there is
I found this site and did a quick searh on Luftwaffe
http://www.peerbot.com/1.seerch.index.h ... lay=detail
Several different favicons appeared and http://www.luftarchiv.de/ got to the
Balkan kreuz before us.

The need for favicons..? Feldgrau has no need! To be honest I hardly notice them.
I don't look at the top location/address bar when loading...
I look at the frame/screen below :D

I merely posted the one's I chose to show how many more possibilities there are,
if feldgrau needed one, and what might be taken into consideration
when choosing a specific identity aka favicon for a site.
4 or 5, now a few more is not a lot of choices.

ps. I favour the feldpost

Sure....Feldgrau doesn't "need" a favicon...but still...it's nice!

The Balken Kreuz is widely used with other foren...I've seen it before.

There could be made a case that ALL boards which center around german military history should use it to show a "belonging to a common cause" but that is doubtfull and will probably never happen.
So IF a board decideds for a favicon it should be something original...

Till now the Edelweiß is the most original...even if I personally would prefer the german helmet which is already in use (above in the board)..... :[]
(It's distinct and recognizable and unique...so far...)

Actually, if I had to pick one of the four, it would be the Wappenschild / Adler / Feldpost / Balkankreuz

Tom, I've found the old thread! As you now know, the Balkenkreuz is used by AHF, out of the four you proposed, I like the Feldpost, although the tri-colour helmet shield looks pretty good too.
