How about a 'Mess Hall' type section?

Post by Jake »

Hi all

This is just an idea with regard to the issues raised in the 'Administration and Moderation?' thread in this section.

Feldgrau contains no specific section for current affairs and 'anything goes', but there seems to be a need for such a section among many members, given the number and type of posts/threads filling Soldatenheim lately. Also, some members feel Feldgrau's general lack of moderation has advantages.

So in the absence of moderators to enforce Soldatenheim's official parameters, why not let that section officially become an arena for 'whatever'? At the same time a new section could be set up, a 'Mess Hall' for example (ie. off duty but still on base, still subject to discipline etc., as opposed to being completely on leave), which could stick to the (ignored) remit of the current Soldatenheim.

Anyway, it's just a thought.

Regards
Jake

I personally don't feel an forum where "anything goes" is an good idea.
There are enough forums on the internet where anything goes is allowed. This sites topic is WWII and I think Jason has been correct
in keeping this focus. IMHO

Hi Annelie

I agree with you, but since it's a fact that 'off-focus' posts on current affairs/whatever topics outside of WW2 happen a lot on Feldgrau anyway, I'm only suggesting a separate section for it. The only other option I can see is more moderators, but not everyone agrees with that either.

My understanding of German is very weak, but isn't the Soldatenheim the place where 'unofficial' topics were discussed? Somewhat along the lines of the 'Enlisted Club?'

If I'm right, then we already have what you're suggesting!

Hi Tom

Maybe you're right. But on the Forum Index board, Soldatenheim is defined as being for "Works of fiction, movies, war games, models, what-if and alternate history, and humor, all RELATED to WWII and Germany." A great many posts there don't conform to this, as Commissar D pointed out in the 'Administration and Moderation?' thread. They also tend to be pointlessly controversial.

Its quite alright to exchange and talk and even have a little fun but it can get carried away. One forum even allows porn photos. Soldatenheim is actually I thought was the place where this type of thing is allowed meaning
works of fiction, movies, games etc.

Exactly. But there's a lot of other stuff in there too, some of which I see has recently been removed, such as 'Bush and creationism' etc.

Maybe everyone likes it how it is, but with the 'Administration and Moderation?' thread in this section currently 7 pages and 102 posts long, I'm not sure. Personally, I'd go with more moderators, but failing that then a new section. But like I said, it was just an idea. If no one fancies it, fair enough.

That's just moving the problem from a non-specific area, to a area specifically designed for that and others.

You either accept what you have or get more Moderators

Hi CY

I agree, more moderators is the best solution, but I can't see it happening anytime soon. In the meantime, if there's a problem it might be best confined to a specifically designed area where it can be avoided or indulged in as you wish, rather than having it crop up here, there and everywhere (again, not everyone agrees with more moderators anyway). That's all I'm suggesting.
