Taking a strictly results driven perspective on what is an obvious "we were better" nationalistic driven post is too self serving don't you think? The German generals you mention wanted to attack the Kursk Salient months before when the Soviet winter offensive ended and would have had sur...

Re: Vyasma

Hi Jason,in reply to your post. "You're doing exactly what Stolfi does" Ok,before you start putting me in the waste basket along with stolfi, how about acknowledging that I am also in agreement with you about the difficulties and risks involved in this.I am trying to examine the feasabilit...

Re: Kiev

Guderian gives a slightly different picture for his divisions around the 14 th/15th.Everything you said accept that 10 th panzer was free from the line by this stage.Does Glantz confirm that? Also apparently Reich and GD were already in rest areas north-west of Yelnaya by the 10th of Aug.Your moveme...

Re: 5th army

5th army was along the line Cherigov-Sosnitsa on 26/8.It was not defending Kiev.As 5th army moved east to Priluki,37 army was defending Kiev on 18/9.<....>Quote from commander 5th army,"we had received orders from the army group to evacuate the area and withdraw eastwards and had already begun...

Re: Kiev

"it seems that the link up was considerably further south near Romodan....."<......>Yes,that is correct. The link up with 1st panzer on Sep 16th was at Lochovistsa[?],125 miles due east of Kiev. This however is not a problem,as the essential task is to prevent any interference with the oper...

Re: Krichev

"the whole advance of AGC's southern flank required 24thPz Korps, plus all of 4th and 2nd Armies."<.......>What do you mean by that?Weren't there atleast 6 divisions[23,292,263,137,15,286]in the line at Smolensk-Elnya-Roslavl by 9/8/41?None of those went south. True, but those divisions di...

I really, really hate Gothic script. I'm very happy that very few post-war books use it, aside from Paul's history of 18th Pz/ArtD. I have tremendous problems deciphering the letters when when the damn thing is in English. Caused some problems for me when I was working on cataloging some incunabula ...

Osterhase, Nah, no militaria. That would take money away from the books <grin>. Curiously enough Chicago got about 6 inches dumped yesterday and things are pretty messed up right now. I wouldn't mind working on such a paper with you, but unfortunately I'm getting ready to move and I'm not sure which...

Hey, how do we know that those are your books? And, not, say mine? I mean I could have sent you those photos for you to pawn off as your own  The photo of p. 384 was unreadable. Next time, if there is a next time, try not using the flash. That's what I do in the library rather than use the cop...

Tim, The whole advance by AGC's southern flank required XXIV. PzKorps, plus all of 4th and 2nd Armies. It began on 8/9 Aug with an attack by the PzKorps southwest of Kritschev. It was immediately successful and the Soviets began to crack on 11 Aug when 2nd and 4th Armies launched their attacks north...

Tim, I really doubt that the Germans could have used 2nd Army as an anvil simply because of the distances between Konotop and Rogachev. It's almost 300 km! Furthermore without pressure from the northern flank, the Soviets might have been able to bottle up 1st PzGr, or at least, prevented any sort of...

Re: kiev

I really, really doubt that 2nd and 6th Armies could have pocketed anything around Kiev absent 2 PzGr. 2nd Army managed a nice little encircelement of its own at Gomel, but being at a bend in the line that was already half- set-up for them. Looking over the Lage Ost maps for this period it's quite a...

Tim, I guess then that everything is a myth. Even the 700 km between Kiev and Tula and the 8 divisions in 2nd Army on 3 September. And the fact the 6th Army was the northern wing of AGS and would be required to link up with 2nd Army on any drive to Moscow. "There are no so blind as those that r...

Tim, I suggest you give Vol IV of Germany in the 2nd World War a thorough reading. I don't have time to extract the operational details, but the sheer impossibility of defending the 700 km front between Kiev and Tula with the dozen or so divisions of 2nd and 6th Armies seems to have escaped you, no ...

Funny thing is that Stolfi did seminal work on the balance of tanks between the Allies and the Germans during the Battle of France back in 1970. First guy to get it right, that the Germans were out-numbered, but then he did HPE. Sad to see a guy go out this way.
