Bjorn: No big deal; we all make mistakes, friend. Oleg: And isn't it true that the German skirt armor (like on the Pz III, Pz IV, and Panther) was adopted, not so much against shaped-charge bazooka-like weapons, but because the Germans were nervous about damage from Soviet AT rifles? I'll grant that...

The only Osprey books I have which are illustrated by Mr. Andrew are the Elite series book on German mountain troops and the MAA book on the Chinese civil wars, but I agree with you, Chris--he's good. He may not be as good as some just yet, but I've compared Mike Chappell's early work with his most ...

No, Bjorn, it's not a Lahti. The Lahti had a top-mounted box magazine much like the British Boys AT rifle, and an odd-looking bipod mount with alternative feet: a spiked set for hard ground, and a curved pair of "skis" for snow. Oleg, I have with me a copy of Hogg & Weeks, Military Sma...

Thanks, Tom, but I'm living on a fixed income and it's a struggle every month just to pay my bills, much less have money for amusements.

SS-Panzergrenadier Divisions: divisional tank battalions...

I note that the Waffen-SS had, by the war's end, seven (at least nominal) panzergrenadier divisions: 4th, 11th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 23rd, and 28th. What were their tank battalions equipped with? Assault guns only, or did some of them at times have at least a company of turreted tanks in their division...

Model wearing Rommel-style goggles?

In the Osprey Campaign book #16, Kursk 1943 , page 15, there's a photo of Col. Gen. Walther Model wearing a pair of British anti-gas goggles, in imitation of F/M Rommel in the desert. There must be an anecdote here. Where did he get them, and what was he imitating Rommel for? Thanks in advance. Your...

I was just kidding around, Marc. Fact is, I can't afford to upgrade my library as much as I'd like to, so I depend on forums like this to learn new and updated things.

Getting back to this string, I'd have to say that the coolest of all WWII uniforms was that of the Panzertruppe (black, double-breasted, dashing--who could ask for more in a military uniform?)--and the coolest headgear was the Einheitsfeldmutze. IMHO, Germany made a terrible mistake replacing it wit...

Fighting knives and hand-to-hand combat training...

What kind of fighting knives were used by the Wehrmacht? Were they issued, or private purchase items? And what was their hand-to-hand combat training like?

Thanks in advance.

SS unit names and their meanings...

Some of the SS divisional, regimental, and battalion names are known to me, but a lot of them refer to people and things I don't know about. I'm going to provide here a list of them, and perhaps someone with greater knowledge of German history can fill me in as to who or what they refer to. SS-Panze...
