Eropa was a liner considered for conversion to a carrier - no conversion work took place. Potsdam was a transport also considered for conversion to an escort carrier - again, no conversion took place. GZ was launched but not completed. Seydlitz was the incomplete Hipper class vessel taken in hand fo...

I think the range of these guns were greater than any ship board weapon of WWII, thought Japan's Long Lance was close (43,700 yards).

The southern group also had a large hall of POW (200,000+) after the failed Soviet offensive in May/June 1942.

Sid,

I agree, my comment was directed to Enrico Cernuschi who drew an analogy to nukes. Many weapons from latter years could have changed the tide if introduced earlier.

I think 100 operational XXi's in 1943 could very well have been a war winner. By the end of 1942, the war in the Atlantic was very much in doubt, it 1943 had seen more extensive losses than 1942, any allied offensive operations would have been in jeopardy.

Marshall was a brilliant administrator and belonged in Washington. He helped turn the US Army into one hell of a fighting machine - I doubt Ike could have done his job (Marshall had the clout to demand what he wanted, Ike, being relatively junior before the war, would not have had that power).
