The Italians, in general, actually fought quite well, especially when they were under German leadership (especially Halfaya Pass). the problem was their outdated equipment and, most of all, the poor quality of their officers. Not only were the officers ill-trained for their duties, but kept themselv...

I've always felt that after Alamein, Rommel was finished as a competant commander, probably a case of battle-fatigue, and this "strategy" is more evidence of that. No defensive line, however strong, was going to stop the Allies forever. They just had too much stuff. this is as bad as deplo...

As I understand it, Tank was the common usage from the Great War. I don't believe Panzer gained currency until after the establishment of Panzer formations in the 30s. Tank was borrowed directly from the English, Panzer is actually an abbreviation of Panzerkampfwagen.

Phylo,

For the record, Emden was a light cruiser. And, arguably the Kaiser's most successful commerce raider was a sailing ship, Seeadler!

Kelvin,

The title was not given by Hitler. It is an old and proud title from the former Austrian Empire. The 44th ID was the holder of the tradition and entitled to the honorific.

No, no, no. The German "nicht sparen" means do not spare, i.e. use as much as you want. If it were referring to the box itself it would be "Nicht bewaren". So if the legend did exist, whoever put it there, it was meant to say use it on the Poles or, as Sean Connery might have sai...

Imad, There is an appropriate punishment for his sort - put him in a cell at Ricker's Island in NYC. And, since that's where the crime took place, that's exactly what will happen once they find him. Actually, since they haven't found him as yet, it may already have been taken care of. Murderous bast...

Correct, Sid. ID44 was the Hoch- und Deutschmeister, one of the most renowned units in the KuK army, second only (possibly) to the Kaiserjäger.

There's a famous photo of the mushroom cloud where you can see Prinz Eugen vertical on one side of the "stem" (right side, as I recall).

You'll probably get plenty of replies in more detail than I am able, but I'll start. 1) these are two different considerations - weight on a bridge comes down to gross weight, so you have to know details of the bridges in your area of operations. getting stuck in soft ground has little to do with gr...

You'll be in the cradle of the real First World War, the conflict from 1756-1763. Battlefields abound, some, from what I hear, virtually unchanged from the 18th Century. It's also a short drive to Dresden and within reach of the Elbbruch and Seelow Heights.
