Hi Sid: My identity, credibility. You have been on about that forever, especially when disputing your pet subject - the useless, evil Waffen SS. "Yet I have always given you the benefit of the doubt" Who do you think you are ? I certainly have no intention to confirm my bona fides to you. ...

Sid, "character assassination" - You have to be joking. I may have in the past called you nit picking and once a bean counter but then we seem to have trouble when it comes to numbers. What about all that fuss about my identity, did you forget that ? You do not claim to be a expert about t...

Hi Sid: "Anecdotage becomes valuable en masse and I value it." that is a new one for you. Usually you state or imply anecdotes are of little value and if not supporting your argument dismiss them as a mere occurrence not worth mentioning. In all our disputes you cite your favorite author a...

Hi Sid:
What is the use - in your eyes we were a flag waving pampered bunch of fanatics who were "fortuitously absent from the front line".
After all you have Overmann and Ambrose's books what can a eye- witness possibly add ?

Hi Sid: I don't know Overmann's statistics or how he ascertained them. I only know what I have seen and heard during conservations with other comrades. In my experiences East or West I have never seen any of my comrades surrender not until the end of the war. When you look at the last day's of the w...

Knox, I would not call it angry when I remember the way so many in the POW camp made a about turn and became Anti-Nazi's over night. As well how your compatriots and officials I had to deal with. No not angry, just disgusted. Certainly no need to feel sorry for me you are right "your new homela...

Matthias, Maybe if you had been raised in Germany and spent part of your youth fighting for your country follwed by years of inhumane treatment in a prisoner of war camp. You would then understand how I feel about your country, a country which sent me out to war during which I was wounded twice, lef...

Heh you guy's, we are talking about something neither of us had any input. As always our leaders/governments tell us hat to do and give us reasons for doing so. I am sure if we all had a choice there would not be enough people to have a war. We were told to we needed Lebensraum (living space) and pr...

Hello Heinrich, You are right we fought for our country, call it Kaiser/Führer, Volk und Vaterland, whatever you like. We thought we were doing the right thing defending our fatherland, stopping the onslaught of Bolsheviks. Just two of the reasons our leaders (a legal elected government) gave us. Li...

Heh Mr. Ludwig, If I could relive the best 1000 days of my life it certainly would not be any of those day's. In fact I consider the bigest portion of my youth the worst time of my life. Since coming away from Germany I have learned what freedom really is and being able to criticise my leaders and g...

Hi Sid, "Waffen-SS men were not "assured a bullet" if captured in the East. That is an overstatement." As far as I am concerned Overmann's books are not something I am trying to dispute, just a book somebody wrote. When I say "assured a bullet if captured" that means ex...

Hi T872, if we had a advantage - I did not see it. Maybe before joining, imaging myself in that cool uniform with lots of decorations was quite the fashion. That was of course the same too for the Wehrmacht soldier but I can assure you it did not last long. The cool uniform, except when back at the ...

Heh Sid:
The time when I really felt the difference being a SS man instead a member of the Wehrmacht was in the POW camp. Especially in the very beginning it almost felt as if I had the pox.

Hi: My own experience - We had a Waffen SS recruiter, a young well decorated SS Oberschar Fuhrer, coming to our school. He made a speech followed by a reminder of the need to defend our fatherland from our principal, a invalided SS Obersturm Fuhrer. The entire class volunteered. That was in early 19...

Anybody would think I am a contrary old geezer when actually I am very nice, mild mannered, agreeable guy.
Just ask my grandson.
