Re: "Trail of the Tigers" by Ron Klages

During long retreats many tansks have to be abandoned (those that are damaged, break down, run out of fuel or cannot pass obstacles like rivers) - not puzzling at all. Effect are probably stronger for high maintenance tanks. Sometimes even an inventory of damaged tanks waiting in a workshop for spar...

The book tries to provide a look into the Wehrmacht in the final months, including a general survey of the stratetig situation and chapters on how the generality viewed the situation, how the last personnel and material resources were scraped together and the accompanying organisational changes, and...

A few details can be found in the dated article "Die Prognosen der Abteilung Fremde Heere Ost", authored by Hans-Heinrich Wilhelm. It seems that the Op.Abt. did some comparisons of anticipated force relations with those from Zitadelle and based on that concluded the attack would have no ch...

Howard Davis Grier "Hitler's Baltic Strategy", (result of the author's dissertation under auspices of Prof. Weinberg, ca. 650 p.) is a superb book, masterfully linking German operations of AG North and also the German navy in the Baltic in 1944-45 to German strategy, with some surprising i...

I won't try to compete with Tony LeTissier - no one has got the subject of individual experiences during those battles covered as well as he has - but what I will do is to try to deal with the fighting from the operational perspective of Himmler then Heinrici. The only one who has done that before ...

Many. Some German officers blamed their allies for any defeat where allies were present. This is the case of Romanians, at least, but I guess they did the same about their other allies. Could you give the names of these officers, and the basis of your "guesses"? From what I have read ther...

9 Pz-38 (t) were missed, unless Michate can find the footnote he thinks exists. Sorry, it seems I expresed myself in an unclear way. I did not want to contest that they were missed. What I wanted to mention is that the aggregate numbers of Pz. 38 (t) on the eastern front in 1943 (without any breakd...

Pz-I - were no longer being utilized as tanks and were no longer counted in any Lage. They appeared in the Gliederungen of 19. Pz. (4), DR (1), and LSSAH (3), and DR and LSSAH mention 1 being lost (LSSAH) and 1 being damaged (DR). Noticing them was a fluke on our part, I'm not sure that many had pr...

According to B. Mueller-Hillebrand, "Das Heer", Vol. 3, p. 126, the number of booty tanks on the whole Eastern front at the date 31 May 1943 was 126, of which 85 were operational and 41 in repair. According to F. Hahn, "Waffen und Geheimwaffen des deutschen Heeres 1933-1945", vol...

Zetterling/Frankson DO show the 26 captured T34 tanks of Das Reich (or was it Totenkopf, I would have to look it up), they DO show the flamethrower tanks in XXXXVIII Pz. corps (perhaps someone has mistaken them for "French tanks", as e. g. in Glantz’s book these are deonted with an “(f)”?)...

Hello Hans, thanks for the data on the Neitzel article. Frieser has published several articles on the battles of Sedan, Charkov and Kursk, but the one I had in mind is included in the following book: - "Seelower Höhen 1945". Vorträge zur Militärgeschichte Band 17. Herausgegeben vom Militär...

Hans, could you provide some more data on the MGM article (which year, number, pages etc.), I would like to have a look at Neitzel's article. BTW, somewhat OT, but are you aware of Lakowski's book on the Seelow battle as well as the articles of said author and K.-H. Frieser in another book (an artic...
