Avete, I collect what is cheap and strikes my fancy, though most of my money is sucked dry by the college vampire. Nevertheless, I still somehow manage to grab something off the market now and again. I have a decent collection of Helmets, 1 reproduction and 5 authentic (2 German, 1 British, 1 Americ...

Winters on the Ostfront

Avete,

Numerous times while reading about the eastern front I have come across the claim that all of the winters between 1941-1945 were colder than the winter of Napoleon's experience in 1812.

Is this true? What sources support this claim? I mean direct sources, not second party.

What's the heartache over the use of avatars? The board's basic program allows for them, so why not use them? If you don't want one, you don't need one. No sense in insulting or criticizing someone because he wants one. Good Lord, people, find something worthwhile to bitch about! Ave Tom, I didn't ...

Avete,

So we want more avatars? Gee, I want a 1076 by 768 pixel image of a Maiko with a Spring Themed Kimono!! :D :D

Image

I am satisfied with our avatars, the more elaborate they are the longer they take to load.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Avete, I don't know if anyone here shares my interest in the Japan and the "flower and willow" world, (the world of the geisha) but have any of you seen "Memoirs of a Geisha" that opened yesterday? How was it? I am guessing it is bad. The actresses are Chinese and the preview mad...

One more for the Stuka. That aircraft has class, no doubt about it.

Avete, If the type XXIs had been produced in the numbers that Doenitz had wanted the type XIIs and IXs manufactured, England quite possibly would have choked. Even if the type XXIs had been produced in small numbers initially, Hitler may have increased their production after having become aware of t...

Ave Dave, Have you read I Flew for the Fuhrer by Heinz Knoke? It has been a while since I read it, but Knoke belly landed his Bf 109 on a frozen lake in Norway. His plane was intact after the landing, so they might have salvaged it, but I do not remember. If not, find the lake! Great idea by the way...

Avete, I have fired a semi Auto BAR. I wasn't very impressed, it was like firing a rather heavy .30-06. I like the AK-47 better than the AR-15 or the M14 I fired, but I want to fire a StuG-44. Have any of you fired one? If so, what's it like? I would also like to fire an original MG-42, but I don't ...

Avete, Personally, I would forego the luxury of shooting around corners in order to have a gun that actually shot where I pointed. Imagine firing it from a foxhole! Think how difficult spraying side to side would be! What happens when you are suddenly face to face with an enemy? Imagine having to tu...

Karbine 98 Magazine Variants

Avete, After having emptied the magazine of the Karbine 98K, if you try to work the bolt you find that you will be unable to close it due to the spring elevated magazine bottom. To close the bolt you must push it down before sliding the bolt forward. Doubtlessly this was intentional. What better way...

Avete, Buffalo Springfield's "For What it's Worth." Next on the list is the "Viennese Blood Waltz" by Johann Strauss. After Strauss comes a piece of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" followed by Marilyn Manson's "Golden Age of Grotesque." There's nothin...

Avete, The neverending Forgotten Soldier debate. I have said this before, but I will say it again. Whether or not anything in the book actually happened, the story is still true. To know what I mean, you should read The Things They Carried by Tim O'brien. Or, just visit the site below http://www.stg...

Avete, One must never forget Murphy's rules of combat: Friendly fire - isn't. Recoilless rifles - aren't. Interchangeable parts - aren't. The easy way is always mined. Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you. Five second fuses always burn three seconds. If it's stupid but it works, it isn'...
