Re: Polish people included as "germans"?
Eldorado, Without details about your family history, all answers will be vague. There were German citizens who were ethnic Poles, within the borders of 1937. These were treated like any German-German. But in the German territories recovered in 1939, and in non-German territories annexed after 1939, ...

Well, looking at the reeducated morons running my old Heimat, I can only sigh "Dem Reinen ist alles rein, dem Schwein ist alles Schwein."

Re: Polish Concripts/volunteers in Normandy--of course
Hundreds of Thousands of ethnic Poles served in the Wehrmacht, since Poles who were German citizens, such as the Ruhrpolen (who immigrated to the Ruhr coal mines in the 1870s-1880s), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruhrpolen or the local population of part of Upper Silesia, or the Masuren (Lutheran Pol...

Re: Volksdeutsch volunteers?
While a few hundred Carpathian German young men volunteered (though fooled by the Propaganda that they were fighting for Europe, not for some holocast or ethnic cleansing), the vast majority of the other 5 or 6,000 were forced, and often brought handcuffed by Slovak police to the SS recruiting offic...

Divorce is the answer here!
The post-WW II boundary fetishism is inhumane. We allow individual men & women (even those with minor children, who suffer from terribly from torn families) to divorce whenever one side wants. Why not collective unions, too? There is no biblical reason for keeping antique Turkish administrative ...

Fake Guilts
I think the Wiking survivor said it well. There is no collective guilt. Otherwise, all human beings would be guilty and murderable (I am an American, so for all I know my kids are collectively guilty for the holocoust of the Indians if collective guilt exists). It is a profoundly inhuman concept, so...

So whut?
His research helped the Americans win the missile race and hence the Cold War. Despite the warts in American life, I am VERY glad that the SU did not beat the US. So let's be grateful to Wernher (he spelled it that way).

295th Infanterie Division
There was a turkmenisches Reservebattalion in the 295th in Stalingrad. Wolfgang Kirstein, in his monumental division history, notes a report on it for August 1942 p. 727, (overall positive, but problems with equipment & personel). Also noted from official reports on p. 779 and p. 836 (still a pr...

Smelser is a known German-baiter
I don't know the other fellow, but Smelser's books reek of a strong anti-German bias. His latest should be read with a pound of salt, in regards to the selection of sources, etc.

You are unfortunately right
But what do we expect. The murderers were the "good guys"--remember, it was sold as a "good war" to the US populace--and the "good winners" write history. FDR had no problems recognizing Stalin in 1933 (after he butchered the peasantry) and then made him his soul-bedmat...

German Brazilians during WW II
As with many other aspects of the Third Reich, there is much hype and misinformation. Ultimately, many innocent civilians were deported http://www.gaic.info/latin_american_history.html because FDR wanted to make Latin America safe for US exports. Max Paul Friedman. Nazis and Good Neighbors The Unite...

European Civil War
Its weird--I keyed in my preferences, and came out a Brit! But I am a German, my Opa fought in Stalingrad, my dad, barely 16, shot in 1944 -45 at Allied bombers targeting civilian areas (Kindergartens) in Mannheim. I guess the result shows that across armies, we are fellow Europeans. I'm sure some B...

The credibility of sources
Sid, Are you making too much out of the statements of 3 German officers on the run? No matter their motives, they would hardly endear themselves to their British captors if they said these Indians were perfect supermen fighters, due to the injustices their people suffered under the Raj. In the end, ...
