Re: Independent Heeres units

Depending on the armed forces, the designation modifier would be "Separate", "Non-Divisional" , "GHQ Troops", "Independent". The Germans used Heerestruppe , which would translate as GHQ Troops There were also units attached to higher headquarters; these dedica...

Re: Afrika Korps Oasis Battalion 300?

There were only five Oasis companies, all raised in Germany by an OKH order from the Gr IV: Az. 72/8900 M 41 g.Kdos. dated 05.04.1941; the company number corresponds to the raising Wehrkreis' number. (NARA H37/107 on Film T78/867) The 2. Oasenkompanie arrived at Tripoli by air on 06.05.1941. The 6. ...

Re: 220 Artillerie Regiment (Mot)

The II./Art.Rgt. 220 was authorized 7,5cm Gebirgsgeschütz 36. I do not know the exact type that was issued.

Re: Panzergrenadier Regiments T.O&E

Playfair in “The Mediterranean and the Middle East”, Vol. III, HMSO, London, 1960, page 346 gives a hint: “The headquarters of the Panzerarmee [on 10 July 1942 at El Alamein] were only a few miles away on the coast, and in Rommel’s absence the officer in charge, Lieut.-Colonel von Mellenthin, hurrie...

Re: 220 Artillerie Regiment (Mot)

Easter Greetings and Salutations! The Kriegsgliederung of 27.10.1942 (BA-MA RHD 18/61) shows the Artillerie-Regiment 220 had two artillery battalions, namely, — the I. (formerly the II./Art.Rgt.220 [i.a.w. Tessin] ) consisting of three motorized batteries equipped with 4 light field howitzers each, ...

Re: Panzergrenadier Regiments T.O&E

If you'rte lucky, the NA at Kew might have the relevant war diaries and/or reports. I know they have extensive captured material of the 15th and 21st Pz Div. Otherwise, the Bundesarchiv-Miltärarchiv in Freiburg/Br — or some kind member of this DG who has this material...

Re: Panzergrenadier Regiments T.O&E

In North Africa, (as was the case with many things German in WWII), designations and equipment often had little to do with each other. Certainly, completely equipping a major unit arriving by air would have been scraping the barrel — if not sifting the sand beneath — of the depots. A change in nomen...

Re: Panzergrenadier Regiment strengths

Major elements of the Festungs-Division Kreta (formerly the 164. Infanterie-Division) — including the three infantry regiments — were flown over from Crete to North Africa in their original configurations in early July 1942. As to strengths, having been stationed on Crete for some time, they were pr...

Re: KStN 103

The KStN 104 was for the Grossdeutschland IR, and would have had additional bits and pieces, different from the KStN 103. And anyway, it's no longer available either. Probably a better source for the organization is KStN 101 (Reich) of 01.10.1937. Basically, KStN 103 was the same organization as the...

Re: KStN 103

The only KStN numbered 103, which was dated 01.10.1937, has apparently not survived the war. It is not listed anywhere.

Re: 33rd Panzer Pioneer Bataillon

I wrote in the posting above "...the 2nd Company was detached to the 2nd Machine-Gun Battalion (acting as its 6th Company) from 1941 to 1942." The company did was not with the MG-Btl. 2 when this battalion was redesignated as the III./Schützen-Regiment 115 on 27.05.1942. The 2./Pz-Pion-Btl...
