Re: What was the relationship of OB West and H.Gr.D?

Thanks Leo that confirms some of my thoughts but it still seems a little confusing.

So was H.Gr.D. an actual combat army group? Were units assigned to it actively engaged or were they just being held in reserve until they were assigned to one of the other army groups?

Thanks again,
Richard

Re: Need help with notations on gliederung

Thanks Tom that is very helpful.

Can someone confirm the contextual use of Reste in this case? and again if this is the remains of a diminished unit at what level does the unit have to be to get notated in this way.

Thanks
Richard

Need help with notations on gliederung

In the gliederung below some unit are followed by (bo.), what does this signify? Some units have Reste in front of them; I loosely translate this to mean what remains of the unit. Is that an appropriate translation? Also, if this is notation indicates that there is only a small portion of the origin...

What was the relationship of OB West and H.Gr.D?

In the gliederung below and others the relationship of these to units seem to be cooperative instead of subordinate. Also at times it seems that H.Gr.D is only an army group on paper with no actual combat value. Can someone explain this relationship or at least where I might find information about i...

Re: Meaning of letter "D" on map of 183.VGD.

Hans, Timm, fantastic information, I very grateful for this data. I appreciate the replies knowing the time it takes to put such information together and especially the references and dates. I don’t recall having an October 9th map but I will have a look, I do however have an interesting October 7th...

Re: Meaning of letter "D" on map of 183.VGD.

Thanks Timm for providing all this extra detail. I did realize it was the 183rd’s panzerjäger company and have been trying to find some reference to the symbol used on the map thinking it might be another representation for a company size unit. Note that all the battalion flags on this map are solid...

Re: Meaning of letter "D" on map of 183.VGD.

Thanks Timm for the additional information as it further clarifies things. It could be Vb on the map but because some of the others are labled 1/3 i thought it could just be sloppy writing for 1/3. I have marked three locations for 1183, the one I have underlined twice I have zoomed and lightened up...

Re: Meaning of letter "D" on map of 183.VGD.

Thanks Jan. You are correct, Tessin shows the Füs.Btl. on April 1945 (see below) but I think maybe something else happened earlier. You make a good point about maybe being a company and then the small units are Zug size but the symbols on the map, the flag for sure, represents a battalion and the no...

Re: Meaning of letter "D" on map of 183.VGD.

Thanks Tom, it seems that Neuaufstellung could represent either a newly activated unit or a unit in reorganization and thanks to some off line help the D does in fact represent Stab eines Divisionfüsilierbataillons. I will just need to look further into this units activities.

Meaning of letter "D" on map of 183.VGD.

Below is a map for the 183.VGD for October 3, 1944, I am trying to identify the unit marked with what appears to be letter D. It’s a battalion size unit with companies 1, 2 and 4 identified on the map as well. There were few units of the 183rd identified as 183 as most units where numbered 219. Only...

Re: anlagen

Hi Pamak, Abgang was a way of accounting for equipment leaving the unit other than through loss, such as when equipment was loaned or turned over to other units. Zugang was used to indicate the acquisition of equipment. As Tom said anlagen are the appendices, often to the KTB. I like to think of the...

Re: NARA price increase

Hey Matt, I did not realize that microfilm duplication was a cash cow for NARA, I will be more than a little disappointed if NARA is trying to cover their budget shortfalls on the backs of those of us that purchase microfilm. At any rate I think the demand will drop sharply at these prices as $120 i...

Re: NARA price increase

While I would agree that the increase is quite steep and I am not in favor of it i would also comment that DVD reproduction may not necessarily be cheaper at this time. NARA has been copying microfilm for decades and I am sure has that process finely tuned. DVD duplication is new to them and from my...

NARA price increase

I heard from someone at NARA today that there would be a price increase effective March 1st, has anyone else heard about this? If it does go into effect on March 1st I thought some of you might want to get in a last minute order as it is not an unsubstantial increase. Microfilm - $85 DVD - $120 Rich...
