Three meters behind and to the left of W.F., Stabsfeldwebel Spandau cradled his MP-40 with sweaty, calloused hands. Even though he had been fighting since '39, he could never get over the icy coldness that coursed through his viens right before a battle. A student of Japan and Karate, Spandau could ...

But there is some simply surreal savagery that I have not read in any German account thus far that compare, the following include him finding Russian soldiers smoking the flesh of a dead soldier over a fire for rations, a dead pregnant woman who has had her stomach slit open with the fetus impaled ...

You really buy the story of a 13 year old talking with vets at reenactments, visiting militaria shops for years already, having a militaria collection, having already done several long marches with full gear etc.. ?? His story is as true as I am a 400 year old dwarf living in a cave. \Christoph Ave...

Ave Taylor, I have to ask; How the devil can you afford this? I've been working since I could walk and I still can't afford anything! College sucks all money away and then some. At 13 I would look at pictures of medals the same way I would look at pictures of battleships, as something unattainable. ...

Hello Spandau I was wondering how the conversations in the book were remembered in such detail after three decades. Maybe that's one of the things you're referring to? Ave Imad, That among just the other action-fiend attitudes of the book. Not only is the dialogue too detailed, it doesn't ring true...

Ave Imad, I haven't read it all the way through so I can't give any factual evidence. Just flip through it and decide for yourself. It has the feel of a novel. Look at it from a literary standpoint and you (at least I do) will have trouble believing that it is nonfiction. I know that is not really w...

Much of the WW2 material I have seen was cut down Ju Jutsu / Boxing / Wrestling with only the simple and effective core left behind. Depending on who you were you could have had just 8hrs or so for your 'unarmed combat' lessons. Not much time. Modern military seem to be taking a more martial arts r...

Avete, having studied and/or competed in Karate, Aikido, Jiu-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Jeet Kun Do and various weapons courses, I would have to say that the German army wasn't particularly missing out on anything. The amount of training and conditioning required to effectively apply these would take too l...
