Cottbus - 16 April 1945

After Koniev's forces breached the northen wing of Heersgruppe Mitte on 16 April, the German forces on Koniev's right wing anchored themselves in the city of Cottbus and put up a fairly strong defense for aprox. 7 days. Can anyone point me to source material that has German OB information for the un...

Richard, By ordering, I mean you pick the folders you want photocopied, Doug's staff will send you an estimate of cost, you send him the check and he sends you the material. They were not scanning documents digitally when I visited Athens, OH in 2005. This, unfortunately is not the best way to go ab...

Here is an on-line link to the Ryan Collection: http://www.library.ohiou.edu/archives/mss/020/container.html#LastBattle You can order things on-line, but in my experience with the collection, many folders contain un-indexed information or "golden nuggets" that are simply not discernable th...

You are absolutley correct. The Ryan collection is an absolute treasure trove, and I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to tap into his material. It took me the better part of three years to review and collate just a portion of the research documents for my book. Make the trip, you will ...

Frederick - Thank you for the comments. I believe that the Soviet assault on Berlin is one of the most ignored battles of WWII, even though it was a watershed in European and even military history as I argue in the book. It dosen't seem to capture the imagination the way a Normandy, Kursk or Staling...

Jon, I don't have any personal contact with veterans from those units. However, you should check out this link to an article from the Historian periodical about the Spanish Waffen-SS volunteers: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-72435152.html You will find several veteran's names that contributed ...

The Reichstag was defended by a mix of Germans from a variety of different groups. The best OB I could come up with (during years of research for an upcomming book on the battle of Berlin) was the following: Konigsplatz Garrision (Included the Reichstag, President's Palace, the Diplomatic Quarter, w...

Vladimir, Not sure if you are familiar with Diecker/Grossmann's Der Kampf Um Ostpreussen: Der umfassende Dokumentarbericht but I scanned in several maps that contain the dispositions of both German and Russian forces at the starte of the battle as well as the German OB. You should be able to see the...

Have you looked at Krieg im Osten by Ulrich Saft? He has some information about the battle. On pg. 536 he shows the 1st, 21st, 58th, and 50th Infantry Divisions, as well as the 18th Flak Division as being involved in the battle.

Hope this helps.

Jon, I'll check your books out. Your subject matter is of interest to me, as I came across many non-German fighters that fought in Berlin during research for my book Bloody Streets . I am particularly interested in the Bataillon Fantasma or "Ghost Battalion" that consisted of Spaniards fro...
