German troops carried the "soft cap" with them. This is witnessed by the photos of the columns of Heer troops captured late in April 45. Many of those in the photos are wearing some type of soft cap (various models). Photos do show the wearing of soft caps near the front and in combat (I h...

Heer Infantry Radio Equipment in 43-45

Did Heer Infantry ("ground pounders" - - not motorized or Panzer Grenadier) in 1943-1945 time frame have radios at zug (platoon) and gruppe (squad) level?

If so what type?

If not, what was the lowest command level that was equipped with radios for communication?

A shor answer

Oberleutnant d. R. = 1st Lieutenant of the Reserves
Fuselier = Light Infantryman (rough translation)
Zugfuhrer = platoon leader
Grenadier = infantryman
Richtschutze = cavalry soldier
Chef = commander of a unit as in "Kompanie Chef"

Führer instead of Kommandeur

My understanding is that when an officer was appointed to a command position in an "acting" (temporary) status he was referred to as Führer instead of Kommandeur.

Training

Knappe's (could be Knape) book "Soldat" talks about his training in the RAD, his basic infantry training (According to him all Heer received infatry training) then his training as an artillryman, a funker, then as an Officer Candidate. After he received his commision, the book mentions the...

Close Combat Bar

Was the Close Combat Bar an "infantry only" award?

Thanks,
