Re: Advice for Authors
I think what really bugs is that there are a lot of pulp historians out there, who churn out books by the dozen (and by the numbers), who just use secondary sources. And there are people who just copy and paste personal reminiscences and make no attempt to weave a narrative together. I don't. I spe...

Re: Advice for Authors
Richard, don't be down on the basis of a few reviews. If you think you have a good book, put up your own website with samples. Sell your book to the people who like that style of writing. There's a sucker born every minute. After you sell it to enough suckers, you'll forget about the negative review...

Re: Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945
Sorry, I did not make it to Zossen. I was at Halbe in 1992, I believe, so a lot of the woods were still virgin. I had also picked up a beautiful artillery splinter - the kind that makes you shudder to imagine in flight - but the guy we were with hurried us and I left it behind. Darn! When I think ba...

...Page 210 Photo on top I think the 3,7 cm Flak could`t knock out those JS-2 as they stood in the dead angle of the Zoo Flakturm... I wondered about this one as well. I think in general when captioning photos it is better to avoid conjecturing too much about what is happening/happened. For example...

Sounds interesting - that T-34 book. So, I take it that opinions are sharply divided on that one?

Re: Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945
If there are lessons to be learned, a few bruises are a small price to pay. @{ I'll be happy to provide examples of what I rant about. For one, take Oskar Munzel's author of Gekämpft - gesiegt - verloren, Die Geschichte des Panzer Regiment 6. Munzel was one of the top armor experts and worthy of his...

Re: Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945
As far as asymmetrical warfare being a buzz word, I both agree and disagree. While the form of warfare was practiced since the time of the Greeks - I point this out in a footnote - modern armies are changing doctrine to fight a new kind of war post fall of Soviet Union. Changing doctrine means chan...

Re: Blitzkrieg Unleashed: Poland 1939
Wish I could comment one way or the other but I haven't seen the book. I do think that if you describe the book accurately, then a reviewer should not attack it for what they think it should have been. Again, I was a little confused by the concept of your book, but will wait to see it to say if I th...

Re: Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945
Lastly, some other minor points from the Introduction 3) Stephan explains his reasoning for using the term "Assault" versus "Battle". I find it a distinction with out a difference. Any major urban area that experiences a battle, more than likely also experiences the violence whic...

Re: Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945
The Contents of the Introduction I will discuss from memory some of the points in his intro. 1) Stephan says he first considered doing this book as a comparative study of the fighting in Berlin versus more recent urban combat. My reaction is, "Thank God, he didn't do that!" He indulges in ...

Re: Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945
The Introduction (or maybe it is a Foreword, I forget) Introductions are tricky because the author is often eager to do a number of things all at once - start telling the story, establish his credentials, tell a story about how he came to write the book, explain the importance of the topic, justify ...

Re: Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945
Okay, let me first preface any comments I make with the fact that I have only skimmed through the book and read the Introduction so far. I'm fairly sure I will give it a 5 star rating on Amazon in recognition that the main body of the book shows it to be the best integrated account of the battle so ...

Re: Steve Zaloga--Is He a Competent Author?
Vor, You have alluded in your PMs to having additional info about your criticism of Zaloga. I'd prefer you raise them here rather than privately. I don't understand your willingness to publicly criticize Zaloga without also publicly giving some concrete examples. Give us a recap or some thread links...
