Re: Frank Buckles, Last World War I Doughboy, Is Dead at 110

Not only must he had been one of the definitely last veterans from WWII when he died. That he also had witnessed a ceremony held in England in 1917 with veterans from the Crimean War of 1853-1856 is really mindboggling, what a perspective in time! These veterans must have been born in the 1820's and...

Re: Unteroffizier Gross -- German Cross in Gold

Hello Dale! In Patzwall & Scherzer's "Das Deutsche Kreuz 1941-1945" (2001), there's only one Gross mentioned that held a NCO rank and was connected to a schwere Panzer-Abteilung and that is Kurt Gross , who received the DKiG on 30.08.1944 as an Oberfeldwebel with the 3./(Fla)s.Pz.Abt. ...

He is spelled Hubert-Erwin Meierdress in Veit Scherzer's "Ritterkreuzträger 1939-1945" (1st ed. 2005).

Re: Rommel at Caporetto

Rommel definitely would have worn his EK (and other decorations as) as a young officer during the Great War. There was hardly any room for individual preferences on this matter for him back then. Here's link to a post that details Rommel's decorations during WWI (and many other biographical facts).....

Hello Jim! I can't help you with any good adresses for military relics and stuff, but the best bookshop for german military history (and a wide range of tin figures) is "Berliner Zinnfiguren & Preussisches Bücherkabinett" on Knesebeckstrasse 88, http://www.zinnfigur.com/ Regards, Kroll...

Re: 23. SS "Nederland" Berlin 1945

Maybe someone can give me the answer to the question: did 23 SS division 'Nederland' fought in Berlin? I read The German Defense of Berlin by W.Willemar where it says the following: 6. Remnants of other combat units, including the 9th Parachute Division and SS Panzer Grenadier Division "Nederl...

Re: Paratroopers with Goering

I'm wondering if anyone can identify these paratroopers who were awarded with the German Cross of Gold, seen here during an audience with Goering on 4 May 1944 I couldn't find any Fallschirmjäger of the 1. FJD that received their DKiG on this particular day, but Göring probably made the formal pres...

Re: Paratroopers with Goering

Hello Gentlemen! The men in the photos are survivors of the Battle for Monte Cassino monastery. Therefore they are likely to be veterans of the 1st FJ Division. This shortens the odds a little! There are lists of highly decorated members (RK and DKiG) of the 1. FJD in the following thread over at AH...

Re: a little mystery about a StuG unit

Hello Gentlemen! All this points to the fact, that none of the units above should be able to show up in Italy in January/February 1944 (and be equipped with Italian Semoventes !) and none should have the "desired" designation at that time either. However, from several sources (Busch (chapt...
