And yet more idiomatic German

From the papers of Ulrich Liss and his friend with 101st Jäger Division complaining about conditions in the Caucasus in late 1942: Denn dort sorgt der Regen dafür, dass jeder Talgrund bei diesem Regenwetter zu einem reissende Wildbach wird und jeder mühsam gebaute Bunker, ohne Dachpappe eben nicht d...

Re: A little idiomatic Erhard Milch

Many thanks Fridgeman.

I'd say the polite English version would be "They're up to their neck in it..."

Not that I'm a polite Englishman :D

A little idiomatic Erhard Milch

It's the one line in italics which I'm guessing is along the lines of "they've used everything up"...

Re: books on 2nd SS Pz div

Actually, prices aren't that bad.

Volumes of the Das Reich history go for about £40, Kameraden bis zum Ende is only about £20. The English translations are slightly more expensive... :[]

Aha. Now I understand it. :D     servieren is in the sense of serving food!

I love long complicated sentences with countless clauses...

This is a letter from two anonymous Munich residents complaining after a bombing raid to Ritter von Epp to intervene and do something about the city's leadership...

How accurate are these losses on the Ostfront?

The following is an extract from an addendum to a OKW communiqué issued early July 1942 after the fall of Sevastopol. I'd be interested to know how accurate (or not) the losses given are (they cover all three branches of the Wehrmacht although I'm assuming a good 90 per cent will be Heer). It's not ...

Not quite sure about this one

Re: What's happening here?

Ask and ye shall receive: Vorne fällt Krasnodar, Maikop und Pjatigorsk.

What's happening here?

To put this in context, in the previous sentences the author is looking forward to reaching the Caucasus with all it entails Doch wird er uns darin wohl am meisten enttäuschen, was war bisher Rußland, was war bisher der Don, was war die Steppe, wo blieben seine Kosaken und wo hörten wir schwermütige...

Re: Memoirs of Gunther Wanhofer !!

A rather strange book indeed. Not so much memoirs as a collection of episodes - and the style at times is more like a novel or Landser volume. Hardly any dates are given either, which makes it rather frustrating. And yet, elsewhere, there are some good accounts. Copies are floating around for about ...
