Re: Retreat from Monte Cassino
My understanding is that the Gustav Line or Winter Line ran from the mouth of the Garigliano River through Monte Cassino to a point just south of Ortona. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Line The Canadians took Ortona in December of 1943 and the Allied offensive started from the Garigliano i...

Retreat from Monte Cassino
At Monte Cassino the German army was ordered to hold the position at all costs. When the unthinkable happened and they were finally forced to abandon the mountain in May of 1944, there was no real plan for that contingency. What followed was a disorderly retreat over a very broad front that was very...

On the wrong end of a B-17 attack
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be on the ground during a raid by a group of B-17's? On November 2, 1942 Werner Mork was sitting in his supply truck in Tobruk harbor waiting to take on a load of supplies being unloaded from the ships docked there. Suddenly the harbor erupted into an ...

Luftwaffe Attack on Korsika
In March of 1944 Axis Sally promised the boys of the 340th Bombardment Group stationed on Corsica a 'visit.' During the night of May 13-14, 1944 the Luftwaffe made good on the promise. A daring raid was executed with incredible precision. Actually it was a double raid. Part one consisted of an attac...

Re: A Corporal's Life in the Wehrmacht
It is astonishing what the robot translators can do, and in many cases they are the only option.
I do not think of myself as being very strong in German, but I do think that my translation is a bit more readable and understandable than the automated service.
Do you agree?

A Corporal's Life in the Wehrmacht
The 18-year old Werner Mork volunteered for the Wehrmacht immediately after the outbreak of war in September of 1939. He was still in the army when the war ended in 1945. His memoirs constitute a full-faceted portrait of the daily life of a simple soldier in the German army. Many episodes of his sto...
