killing

Sid quote: >>>>>The first thing to say is that most Waffen-SS men probably never killed anyone in combat, let alone in a war crime. Furthermore, many latterly were actually conscripts, not volunteers. Therefore mere membership of the Waffen-SS was not deemed to be criminal at Nuremberg. <<<<<en quot...

panzerfaust

Hi y'all When I was volunteered :x for a himmelfahrt kommando, we all were among other things outfitted with panzerfausts. The model 60, was at the time available, so that's what we got. during one small action I got stuck in a foxhole, and was "left behind". An advance group, lead by an a...

Re: Haen's experiences

I have been fortunate enough to read several of Haen's experiences on other forums and it's truly is a learning experience. It always gets me to thinking.... Is the book ready yet? I'm sure he will not have a problem selling many many copies of it. Haen, if I can help you please let me know. Brooke...

Hi Guys, It sounds more like a suspension of some civil liberties. Loss of citizenship seems to over state the case. They appear to have remained legally Dutchmen, but without the full range of civil rights this would normally imply. Cheers, Sid. I forgot to mention that we also cold no longer get ...

HaEn? What do you say to the Nuremburg decision? Do you think it fair? I think, from what I have read, and seen about the procedures, that the whole thing had a forgone coclusion. "HANG EM" ! Had it been "run "by the western allies only, I MIGHT have been different. However it w...

welcome

Welcome, Herr Lorman. By all means keep writing your memoirs down, even if you cannot get them printed yet. I have been doing this for quite some time now. What started as a collection of 'stories" for my kids and grandkids (Opa what did YOU do in the war ?), grew into a book. Yet to be publish...

re-enactment

There is nothing wrong with re-enactment, as long as it is done historically and humanly correct. It provides for "living history" and a better understanding of what it would have been like. There are groups however that make a laughing stock out of the whole thing. If they only want to ge...

interview

Dear Rudi, Thanks for reminding us of your bio on the forum. I had read it in the past, but just about all forgotten about it. It's a great narrative, with very good personal insights. I suggest all of our members read it, and learn. Perhaps someday i will have the guts to post mine 'from the beginn...

shooting

You see, those are the sort of anecdotes we need! They put a much more personal face on things, and let us see beyond the propaganda films, and the snapshots we see in books. Reality. HaEn, what chapter should that story be in??? Hi Tom, You have the script . . . .it is not in there. Remember we ha...

Danke, Rudi. Verrrrrry interesting as Arti Johnson of Hee-haw would have said. (the guy in the German overcoat and WWI helmet.) Amazing how well your friend kept his dairy. Most of my stories are recollections of: "sometimes around so and so" :D Keep em coming; people need to learn some mo...

memory

See ? your memory is not as bad as you thought. :D :D :D We had a similar "secret" supplier, making "kartoffel sprit" (potato alcohol) somewhere in our unit. We never found out who he was, but you knew he was there, when the Marketenderwaren (rations) ran out and there still was ...

vets

Hello Gerhard,
Good to see your posts here.
Too bad the other forum where we also had some nice discussions went belly up.
Perhaps we could start a thread here, where vets can exchange memories.

what ?

they deserve to be shot, the ss were monsters  That is the most stupid post I have read in a long time. Please do some research (not the history channel) before you pass an armchair-general judgement. We were soldiers foremost, and mosttimes good ones as such. Yes there were, as in any army s...
