My only criticism might be that "Viele" is too strong; "Eine wenige" might have been a better choice. I think J-H, Thomas and other German historians of the war here will agree with me. This is also the view of leading proponents of the MGFA, at least Rolf-Dieter Mueller express...

But what in that article causes you to believe that they have spoken up? There's no mention of SS or Wehrmacht veterans, is there? Severeal W-SS veterans, e. g. von Ribbentrop, issued articles on their or their units' actions at Prochorovka in the "Der Freiwillige" magazine. These were us...

"Heeresgruppe Nord" by Werner Haupt may be a starter, if you can read German.

Jan-Hendrik,

I think Bogdan Musial covers that topic in various books and articles.

And what you find is normally the typical Knopp stuff and the like. Unfortunately the best military history books are also the hardest to find. May the web order services be praised, I think since years I have only ordered new (sometimes pretty old) books that way.

Jan-Hendrik, is the Szamveber book (or any of his books) available in German or English? Generally how good are the English translations of the unit histories (the German versions are unfortunately mostly prohibitively expensive)? I'll spend some days at Budapest in September, so perhaps might get a...

AFAIK, the southern attack wing of the Soviet November attack came as a surprise, because the Germans thought supply difficulties would rule out the possibility to sustain larger troop concentrations in the Khalmyk steep. As to von Weichs and his staff, he seems to have favoured an immediate breakou...

Thomas, which source would you recommend on the tactical fighting in Stalingrad (I do have Kehrig, but this one is quite short on the city fighting). I have yet to see Doerr, does he include something on that? An interesting article on tactical fighting in Stalingrad (as this thread has suffered fro...

I prefer to read the primary sources like the the Rudolf Lehmann's The Leibstandarte or archival materials. 1. Rudolf Lehmann is any bit as much a secondary source as is Zetterling/Frankson. So is in fact any historian's work. Primary sources are only the filed materials in the archives themselves,...

Hello Jhalcli, it is indeed my hope, too, that someone will provide some good material on the Soviet forces, their strength and losses etc., in that particular battle. Unfortunately noone has done so until now, so for this question basically we are left with unsubstantiated figures from claims of th...

I think a few works from Kurowski are acceptable, if not good (the book on the Sturmgeschütz units he co-authored and a book on Stalingrad containing some interesting information) but even in these you have to read over the somewhat larmoyant style and be careful and better cross-compare specific cl...

jhalcli, the whole fighting around Tarnopol is well described in the booklet by Gert Friebe, "Fester Platz Tarnopol" (this is actually the source Buchner basically relies on). BTW, perhaps it should be noted that during the specific time (spring 1944) raw tank kill claims by the German uni...
