You guys are right when you say the young people don't know what the hell it was all about. I just read in our paper that a teacher wanted the kids to do something in a certain way,the kids called it Gestapo tactics, these kids have no idea what the Gestapo was, they seem to pick up a lot of words t...

Last night my wife and I were sitting in the living room talking about many things. The idea of a living will came up and I said to her, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machineand fluids from a bottle. If it ever comes to that just pull the plug. She got up,unplugged th...

Thanks for the info guys, the only reason i brought this subject up was you hear so much about the Germans using young people, such as 11 SS Panzer. To hear some of the talk you'd think they were the most heartless people in the world for using youth, if what i read is correct the age of the 11panzer...

Young men in the BEF

I was watching a program on WW1 and it seemed that the BEF had quite a few 16 & 17 yr. olds, they had some vets talking about the war and one said his unit had two young boys as replacements and they got an order to attack both boys deserted, were caught and shot at sunrise. From what i've read it ...

John, having served with Wet Pointers, VMI,Citadel and officers who were commissioned thru different school programs, they all had good officers but what i found unappealing about the ring knockers,West Pointers ,they knock thier class ring on the table when they want attention, is the way they treate...

Hi John,I must agree with a lot of what you say,the army can be very clannish,at West Point you see the same old father son and now daughters year after year following each others foot steps, you wonder if any new thinking ever gets in. Some rate West Point as a second rate school, it was never like ...

When you resign your commission you can talk as a civilian with no axe to grind,I know this is'nt about the German military, but this forum seems to give more leeway on the things to discuss, such as Vietnam. Let's give George a little break, 9\11,katrina,a real tough hurricane season, living in Flori...

Generals

What do you think of the Generals who are running to the TV talk shows and complaining about Rumsford? My thoughts are, in this country the military is subordinate to the civilian power, they could have complained thru channels or else resigned thier commission instead of waiting for thier pensions....

About the M1 Garand and autofire. My memory is hazzy but i think the US Army rifles had a trigger pull of 4.5 to 5 lbs, when we got our M1s' there was some ass who wanted hair trigger so they would file the sear,a coutmartial offence. The real trouble was when you went to "order arms" and t...

Thanks Dirlewanger for a very good rundown on the Ross. It always amazes me on how many soldiers had to die because of those damm politics. I'l bet if the Canadian troops could get thier hands on the guy who sent them into combat with a faulty rifle(of all things) they would wrap one around his neck.

Ross rifle

I'm reading Winston Groom's "A Storm in Flanders" and he mentions the Ross MK3 rifle that the Canadians were equiped with,it was chambered for the British .303 but there seemed that the machining had a lot too be desired with unhappy results. Why didn't the Canadians use the British Enfield...
