Maxium age for conscripts...
...in U.S. military and German military during WWII? Had a discussion with an American WWII vet recently that stated American men up to age 34 or 36 were drafted. I disagreed saying that American men in their 30s were not drafted, that something like 28 was the oldest that were drafted. What was the...

Maximum range of WWII torpedoes?...
If I had to guess, I would say a torpedo could run 4 to 7 kilometers, or about 2.5 to 4 miles before losing propulsion. Curious if any navy included a self-destruction device in torpedoes upon not hitting a target after running a specified distance. Anyone remember the Kirk Douglas WWII movie in whi...

Submarine "bow shot" as depicted in "Run Silent, Run Deep"
I have seen Run Silent, Run Deep a number of times. This past Saturday when I happened to flip to Run Silent, Run Deep on TCM (tcm.com) I wondered, again, how common it was for a submarine to sink a ship with a dead on "bow shot" as it was called in the movie. Considering that most cargo a...

"Counter Clockwise" by Roger L. Conlee...
This is one WWII theme novel I was thinking of with a sci-fi touch. I will look for a synopsis on it.

Despite what one may think of this movie...
...and what may be thought of as a comic book-style approach to storytellng, I found the rathskeller scene in which the accent of a German officer is questioned to be rather gripping. How about you?

World War One story/movie about a ship in Africa(?)...
Trying to remember the name of a movie about a warship in Africa during World War One. Not thinking of the "African Queen," the Humphrey Bogart movie. This one might have been about either a German or British ship that was possibly towed across land or some such jungle scenario. Anyone kno...

...once the roads petered out after moving east out of Poland. No all-weather roads to speak of in the Soviet Union that connected cities, plus a rail system that was of different gauge. Speer should have injected, "Mein, Fuhrer, we have a little logistic issue to work out with this Barbarossa ...

Arizona shooter cited Mein Kampf in online postings...
I keep wondering if I should bother to read Mein Kampf. Is the book at all interesting, or is it just full of stale, boring ruminations of a frustrated man?

"Decision Before Dawn" (1952?)
Curious how many German soldiers came over to the (western) Allies as (name slips me) in this movie. Good storyline that could be remake movie material, since WWII seems to be the war that keeps on giving movie material.

How does being a Lions fan sound?...
I was born in Detroit and spent most of my life there. I used to attend Lions games on cold winter days when they played at Tiger Stadium before they moved to the Pontiac Silverdome in 1974. Well, at least the Charlotte Panthers have been to the Super Bowl. The Lions are the last of the pre-1970 AFL...
