Re: Battle of Korsun-Shevchenko(Hitler agreed with of gen. lie)
First, who read to everyone actually «Study» is evident clumsy attempt of mister Critic to use in the purposes small discrepancies not essential character. If what you quoted was all that Mr. Zetterling criticized then you'd be right, but his critique is much broader and full of more substantive is...

Re: Body found at Kursk
I suppose the http://www.volksbund.de/kurzprofil/homepage_en.asp were informed? They also are responsible for finding identity of the body and will contact the concerning family. That's good information, Annelie. I'll pass it on. I wonder if the body is that of Oberst Rudolf Köhler? I THINK he was ...

Re: Body found at Kursk
You're right, now that I look at this site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranks_and_ ... utzstaffel
I see that a sturmbannfuhrer doesn't have anything at all on his epaulettes.
Would a skull on his collar mean simply a panzer officer?

Body found at Kursk
A friend of mine in Russia just told me about a body of an unknown German officer found at the village of Sretino, near Tomarovka on the southern face of the Kursk salient. It's in a trench with 20 or so other bodies. The body is in the black uniform of a colonel and is wearing a tanker's helmet. He...

Re: Fuhrungsabteilung
I see, thank you. It seems that the Ia and fuhrungsabteilung both kept separate war diaries (KTB). If they're the same organization, why would that be?
What would be a good translation of fuhrungsabteilung?
Thanks in advance!

Fuhrungsabteilung
Can someone tell me what the fuhrungsabteilung was in a division HQ? Is it different from the Ia, the operational section?

Re: Stalingrad statistics
Manfred Kehring's STALINGRAD has daily losses in a chart (p. 670) named Tabelle uber Starke, Verluste und Luftversorgung der 6.Armee in Stalingrad vom 20.11.1942 bis 3.2.1443. It shows daily losses from Dec. 12 through Jan. 10 and strength on Dec. 6, Dec. 18, and Dec. 23rd. It is not broken down by ...

Re: NARA Records Now Available on DVD Media
Is there any way of cross-referencing from BA-MA files to NARA files? I know my way around BA-MA quite well... but not around NARA. So for example, RH28-1/1 are 1 Geb Division papers from the Polish campaign (war diary from memory). Any idea what the corresponding NARA file might be? Wouldn't it be...

German books on Kursk
What are considered the best books in German about the Battle of Kursk? I have Silvester Stadler's book, but that focuses on the II SS Panzer Corps.

Re: Red Army Failure at Cherkassy
Alas, unfortunately, there is not answer to a question - where those 40,000 persons, that is four high-grade infantry divisions which, ostensibly, have avoided destruction in a pocket in Korsun-Shevchenko? The one who wishes to trust fairy tales of the German generals, can continue search further. ...

Re: A writer's qualifications
I appreciate all of the responses. I overstated the case when I said "all available material" - unfortunately that's impossible. But I think one can get 95% of the way there by being able to read German & Russian, and can sleep peacefully even if knowledge of Latvian, Estonian, Swedish...

A writer's qualifications
A question for all you writers out there: When writing about a topic such as the Eastern Front, to what degree can a reader expect that the author has mastered all available material on his subject? I have that expectation but it may be unrealistic because I realize that there is simply too much inf...

Re: Need Help in Soviet Era Book Identification
I prefer "The Assault on Berlin." "The Storming of Berlin" is OK too. The subtitle is "Memories, letters, and diaries of participants in the Battle for Berlin."
