Re: Any quick way to find out
FWIW, I'm curious as to what the difference is in how much information WASt will provide about an individual, with vs without death certificate? Would hate to think that just anyone on some knucklehead mission who's able to simply provide the name of a vet could get anywhere near the amount of infor...

Re: uniform ID
Thanks  ... lol, it's been so long since I posted that I'd almost forgotten about this request. I did not know that the low boots with gaiters were standard Heer issue by then. By all means, if you have a complete list handy (or where online I can find one) of the Volksgrenadier units at Nordw...

Re: Foreign Volunteers in the SS
If you can read German, by ALL means check to see if books by Friedrich Brettner are still available! His research and books specifically focused on German units involved in action between Vienna and Graz at the very end of the war, based on memoirs of those who were there at the time, soldiers as w...

uniform ID
Hello … I realize this is a long shot because of the low image quality, but I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out, based on the uniform details in the three pics, if they're more typical to Heer or WaffenSS. Best I know, this was late winter '45 in the Saar region, this fellow (mom's brothe...

Re: Questions on tanks -- AA machineguns & "special" ammunition
..so apparently AA guns were able to be aimed at targets like that pretty fast after all! I'll bet it didn't take long for those batteries on the ground to go 'uh oh' after they saw what happened...

Re: Questions on tanks -- AA machineguns & "special" ammunition
lol, the problem with the Jabos was that they were there and gone within seconds! … far too little time for flak to react (unless by pure chance it was already pointed somewhere along the route of the plane;) I honestly do not know if allied aircraft carrying out low level attacks were even ...

Re: Questions on tanks -- AA machineguns & "special" ammunition
After posting my prior comment, I thought I'd misread the original post but no longer was able to edit.. Perhaps the original post was more in reference to AA guns mounted on armored tracked vehicles, instead of just small caliber MG's? That's why I mentioned the 3.7 and 2cm flak. The P-47 Thunderbo...

Re: Questions on tanks -- AA machineguns & "special" ammunition
What I'm curious about is if the "AA" is reference to "anti-aircraft", or "anti-armor"? So far, I thought "AA" meant only "anti-aircraft". Reason I ask is because dad served in a unit near the end of the war that was equipped with two types of anti-a...

Re: Ammunition wagons
Thanks for the additional info about the cart, guys, I appreciate it. Although probably not a German cart, by the way it's parked right there, it certainly appears likely that it's already in use by dad's group, and not just left behind, cover and all, by the locals. He did make it a point to mentio...

lol, you may well be right about that..very possible the cart was already there when they arrived. Other than it was in the Ukraine in '43, he never gave me a further explanation of the pic...

Re: Ammunition wagons
This low quality photo probably won't help you much, but here's a scan of one of dad's photos from the Ukraine in the summer of '43, where he served with GJR138. He was the leader of an 8cm mortar crew and company field armorer, so I don't know if the cart in the pic is for the mortar and ammo, armo...

Re: Naval battles for Narvik 1940
WOW, interesting article! In '93 during a visit to my hometown in southeast Austria I had the good fortune to have a chance to briefly speak with an elderly vet of GJR138 who was there during the campaign, and he indeed mentioned the difficulties they faced during the voyage to Narvik. Most notable ...

Re: Kriegsmarine officers and Valkyrie..
Thanks! Naturally I'm curious as to who that officer may have been .. whether he was a conspirator who tried to escape, or if he was just someone who happened to be there that day, and was just trying to get as far away from the fracas as possible. Dad never mentioned how long his unit was actually ...
